Still on Windows 10? Your deadline is now October 2027

Microsoft stopped standard support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Home PCs enrolled in its Extended Security Updates program keep receiving security fixes, and in June 2026 Microsoft pushed the end of that program back a year, to 12 October 2027. If your PC was already enrolled, the extra year applies automatically.

Enrolment is done from Windows Update. It is free if you back up your PC settings to a Microsoft account, or costs 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-off payment of US$30 or the local equivalent. After October 2027 a Windows 10 PC keeps working, but every new security flaw stays open, which is a poor bet for a computer you bank or shop on.

Before you replace a Windows 10 PC, find out why it cannot move to Windows 11. Microsoft's free PC Health Check app gives the answer. The usual hurdles are TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and the processor, which generally has to be an Intel 8th generation or AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer.

Tools that force Windows 11 onto unsupported hardware do exist. Microsoft does not guarantee updates on those machines, so we do not suggest them for a PC you rely on. If the answer is a new computer, the old drive usually still holds everything you need, and getting the data off it is a job we do.

Gaming PCs, graphics cards and consoles

A gaming PC that crashes, restarts or loses its picture under load is where guessing gets expensive. The same symptom can come from the power supply, the graphics card, overheating or a driver, so we test before anyone buys a part.

• Crashes or black screens only in games: often a power supply that cannot hold up under load, or a failing power stage on the graphics card.
• Coloured blocks, lines or no display: usually the graphics card itself. We repair cards at component level, with graphics card repair from $330 for thermal work and from $430 for power stage faults.
• Fans at full speed and high temperatures: dried thermal paste or pads and a clogged cooler, which a thermal service sorts out.
• PlayStation, Xbox or Switch faults: HDMI ports, power supplies and overheating on PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Series consoles, and the Nintendo Switch. See console repairs.

How a repair works, step by step

1. Call 0400 454 859. Describe the machine and the fault. For common jobs you get a from-price on the call, and laptop parts are priced by model.
2. Drop it off between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday. You get the workshop details when you ring, because the address is not published. Bring laptop chargers; for a desktop, the tower is enough.
3. Diagnosis. If the cause is not clear, we open the machine up and test it. That bench diagnostic costs $150, and it is waived when you go ahead with the repair.
4. Your go-ahead. You approve the quote before work starts, and any change to it means a phone call first.
5. Collection. Simple repairs with parts on the shelf are often ready the same or next day; ordered parts usually add two to three days, and complex board work can take a week or longer.

After that date, Windows 10 keeps running but gets no more security fixes, so new flaws stay open. For a PC used for banking, shopping or work email, plan to move it to Windows 11 or replace it before then.

Is it worth fixing a broken laptop?

A rough rule: fix it if the repair costs well under half the price of a comparable new laptop and the machine can run Windows 11 or a current macOS. A cracked screen or a failed charging port on a three-year-old laptop is usually worth doing. A board fault on a laptop that cannot run Windows 11 usually is not, and we will say so on the phone.
