What it costs

Every quote starts with a free phone call. Tell us the make, the model and what it is doing, and for most common faults we can give you a from-price on the call. Laptop screens, batteries and keyboards are quoted by model, because the part is most of the cost and part prices vary widely from one model to the next.

When the cause is not obvious and the machine has to be opened up and tested, the hands-on diagnostic is $150. It is waived if you go ahead with the repair, so you only pay it on its own if you decide not to proceed. We never go past the agreed quote without ringing you first.

Before you bring it in

• Back up if you still can. If the computer still starts, copy anything you cannot replace to an external drive or cloud storage first. A repair should not touch your files, but a failing drive can stop at any moment.
• Find your BitLocker recovery key. Many Windows 11 laptops encrypt the drive automatically. After a motherboard repair, a BIOS update or a drive transfer, Windows can ask for the 48-digit recovery key before it will start. If you sign in with a Microsoft account, the key is usually saved under Devices at account.microsoft.com. Find it before the repair, not after.
• Bring the charger with a laptop. A failed charger or cable can look exactly like a dead laptop, and we need yours to rule it out.
• Bring only the tower with a desktop. Leave the monitor, keyboard and mouse at home unless one of them is the problem.
• Write down the password, or set up a spare account. We need to sign in to test the machine properly once it is fixed.
• Note what happens and when. Error messages, beeps, flashing lights, and whether it fails from cold or only once it warms up, all shorten the diagnosis. A photo of the screen helps.
• Spilt something on it? Switch it off, unplug it, do not try to charge it and do not put it in rice. Corrosion keeps working on the board while it sits, so bring it in as soon as you can.

Can you fix a laptop with water damage?

Often, if it is dealt with quickly. Switch it off, unplug it and do not try to charge it or turn it on to check. Rice does not dry out a circuit board. Liquid leaves residue and corrosion on the board, which we clean and then repair at component level, replacing the parts that have failed. The sooner it reaches the bench, the better the odds.

Can you recover files from a laptop that will not turn on?

Often the drive is fine even when the laptop is dead, so we can either repair the laptop or recover the files from the drive. Standard data recovery jobs are no data, no fee. Laptops with storage soldered to the board, such as recent MacBooks, need the board working again first, which is where board-level repair comes in.
