The connector gets pushed in and pulled out thousands of times and eventually the solder joints weaken or the port housing cracks. We also see alot of ports that have been damaged by lint and debris buildup inside the connector which prevents proper contact.
For laptops the most common issue is DC jack failure where the barrel connector becomes loose or the internal solder joints crack from the laptop being moved around with the charger plugged in. MacBook charging port issues are usually related to the USB C connector itself or in some cases a fault on the logic board around the charging circuit.
