At Computer Repairs Pronto we handle computer upgrades for customers across the Hills District. If your computer is running slow an upgrade is often the best solution. We do alot of SSD upgrades for customers wanting to breathe new life into older machines. Also RAM upgrades, graphics card upgrades and general hardware upgrades for both laptops and desktop PCs.

SSD Upgrades

SSD upgrades are hands down the best upgrade you can do for an older computer. If your computer still has a mechanical hard drive (HDD) then swapping it out for a solid state drive (SSD) will make a massive difference to performance. Boot times go from minutes to seconds. Programs load faster. Everything just feels snappier.

We do SSD upgrades on both laptops and desktop PCs. The process involves cloning your existing drive to the new SSD so you keep all your files, programs and settings. Most SSD upgrades can be done same day.

Types of SSD Upgrades We Do

• 2.5" SATA SSD - Standard SSD that fits most laptops and desktops. Good value option that still delivers major speed improvements.
• M.2 NVMe SSD - Faster than SATA SSDs. Requires an M.2 slot which most modern computers have. Best performance option.
• M.2 SATA SSD - Same form factor as NVMe but uses the older SATA interface. For computers that have M.2 slots but not NVMe support.
• External SSD - USB connected SSD for extra storage. Good for backups and moving files between machines.

We source SSDs from reliable brands like Samsung, Western Digital, Crucial, Kingston and Seagate. We can discuss options based on your budget and performance requirements.

SSD Upgrade Pricing

SSD upgrade pricing depends on the capacity you need. A 500GB SSD is usually enough for most people but if you have alot of photos, videos or games you might want 1TB or more. Give us a call and we can provide a quote based on your requirements.

RAM Upgrades

RAM upgrades can help if your computer is struggling with multitasking or running out of memory. If you find your computer slowing down when you have multiple programs open or lots of browser tabs then more RAM might help.

Most computers can be upgraded from 8GB to 16GB or even 32GB depending on the motherboard. We can check what your computer supports and recommend the best upgrade path.

Signs You Might Need More RAM

• Computer slows down when running multiple programs
• Browser gets sluggish with many tabs open
• Video editing or photo editing is slow

RAM Upgrade Compatibility

Not all RAM is compatible with all computers. We check what type of RAM your computer uses (DDR3, DDR4, DDR5) and what speeds it supports before recommending an upgrade. Some laptops have RAM soldered to the motherboard which means it cant be upgraded. We can advise on your options.

Graphics Card Upgrades

For desktop PCs we can upgrade graphics cards to improve gaming performance or video editing capabilities. Graphics card upgrades are less common on laptops as most laptop GPUs are integrated or soldered to the motherboard.

Graphics Card Upgrade Considerations

• Power Supply - Modern graphics cards need adequate power. We check if your power supply can handle the new card.
• Physical Space - Graphics cards have gotten bigger. We check if the card will fit in your case.
• CPU Bottleneck - An older CPU might hold back a new graphics card. We advise on balanced upgrades.
• Monitor Resolution - Higher resolution monitors need more powerful graphics cards.

CPU Upgrades

CPU upgrades are possible on desktop PCs if the motherboard supports a faster processor. For laptops CPU upgrades are rarely possible as the processor is usually soldered to the motherboard. Desktop CPU upgrades can provide a significant performance boost but often require compatible motherboard support.

Storage Upgrades

Beyond SSD upgrades we also add extra storage to computers. This might be a second SSD for more space, an additional hard drive for storing files, or external storage solutions.

Laptop Upgrades

Laptop upgrade options are more limited than desktops but SSD and RAM upgrades can still make a big difference. We upgrade laptops from all major brands including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus and Acer.

What Can Be Upgraded on a Laptop?

• SSD/Storage - Most laptops allow storage upgrades. Some have both 2.5" and M.2 slots.
• RAM - Many laptops have upgradeable RAM but some have it soldered. We can check your model.
• Battery - Replacement batteries to restore battery life on older laptops.
• WiFi Card - Upgrade to faster WiFi 6 if your laptop supports it.

Desktop PC Upgrades

Desktop PCs offer more upgrade options than laptops. We can upgrade pretty much any component including storage, RAM, graphics cards, power supplies, cases and cooling systems. We also do desktop PC repairs if something has stopped working.

Upgrade vs Replace

Sometimes an upgrade makes sense, sometimes its better to replace the whole computer. We can advise on the best approach based on your budget and requirements. Generally if a computer is more than 7-8 years old and needs major upgrades it might be more cost effective to replace it.

Data Migration

When we do upgrades we migrate your data to the new hardware. For SSD upgrades we clone your existing drive so everything stays the same. For new computers we can transfer your files, documents and settings. We also offer data recovery services if you need to retrieve files from a failed drive.
