If your card is throwing coloured blocks across the screen, showing nothing at all, or spinning its fans up and then dying, it is very often fixable. Most shops will tell you otherwise because swapping the card is all they are set up to do. We work at component level, which means finding the individual part that failed and replacing it rather than writing off the whole board.

Why a Faulty Card Usually Is Not Dead

A modern GPU is a large circuit board carrying several hundred components. The processor itself sits in the middle, surrounded by memory chips, and along one edge sits a bank of power delivery circuitry that converts what comes in from your PSU into the low voltages the processor actually runs on.

Almost all of those parts fail more readily than the processor does. A power stage MOSFET is a cheap component under constant thermal stress, memory chips sit under a heatsink that may not have been making proper contact for years, and solder joints crack with repeated heating and cooling. When one gives out the card stops working, but the expensive part in the middle is usually untouched. Replace the failed component and the card goes back to normal.

Working Out Whether It Is Worth Fixing

This is the question worth answering before anything else, and the honest answer depends almost entirely on what the card is worth. Cooling work pays for itself on nearly any card. Power and memory faults make sense on cards in the mid range and above. A degrading processor is not worth touching regardless of what the card cost.

Replacement pricing has made this calculation far more favourable than it was a few years ago. Supply has been tight through 2025 and 2026 and Australian prices climbed accordingly, with the RTX 5090 averaging above $5,000. When a replacement costs that much, fixing one failed component is straightforward arithmetic.

Every price below is a starting point, because a single failed MOSFET and a full memory chip replacement are not the same amount of work. Your figure is confirmed once we know what is actually wrong.

For context, national board level operators quote component work from around $450 upward, and Adelaide and Melbourne specialists advertise from $500. Most places in Sydney will not put a number on the page at all. We publish ours so you can compare before you commit rather than after.

Thermal and firmware jobs are usually back in one to two business days. Power stage and memory work runs three to seven. Reball and physical damage repairs take five to ten. Intermittent problems take longer because they have to be reproduced before they can be traced, and anything needing a part ordered in depends on supply.

What Happens to the Cards We Cannot Fix

Around nine in ten cards we take on go home working. That number is worth stating plainly because almost nobody in this trade publishes one, and the shops that do sometimes quote odds closer to a coin toss.

The reason is not that we solder better than everyone else. It is that the $150 diagnostic comes first and we are willing to lose the job. If the graphics processor itself is degrading rather than a joint or a chip, we say so and send the card home rather than attempt a repair that buys you a few weeks. Shops offering free assessments have a commercial reason to find something fixable on every card that arrives. We do not. If yours falls in that last ten percent you pay the $150 and nothing else, and you get an explanation of what failed and what we would buy instead.

How the Work Is Done

  1. Bring it in or post it. Drop the card at the workshop during business hours, or post it if getting across town is impractical. Card only — keep the cables and screws.
  2. Diagnostic on the bench, $150. Current draw on a limited supply first, then rail by rail continuity testing, thermal imaging under load, and inspection under magnification. This is where the actual failed component gets identified rather than guessed at. If you proceed with the repair, the $150 comes off the invoice.
  3. Quote, and a straight answer. You get the fault, the fix, a price, and our view on how long it will hold. If we think the processor is on the way out we will say the card is not worth the money.
  4. The repair itself. Hot air and microscope work depending on the fault. Chip replacement, power stage rebuilds, trace reconstruction, firmware recovery. Carried out by the same specialist every time, so the person who quoted your card is the person who fixes it.
  5. Testing before it goes back. Sustained load testing and thermal checks, then 12 months of warranty on parts and labour. A card that fails again a fortnight later helps nobody, which is why we would rather turn a job down than take a punt on it.

Telling a Failing Card from Other Problems

Plenty of things look like a dying card and are not. Before assuming the worst, reseat the card, try a different cable and monitor, and if the machine has onboard graphics, run from that instead. Driver problems produce black screens and crashes that mimic hardware failure closely.

The signs pointing at genuine hardware failure are corruption that persists into the BIOS screen before drivers ever load, corruption that changes with temperature, a card drawing heavily but producing no output, and burning or hot spots you can smell. Corruption in one game only is usually software. Corruption at the BIOS screen is not. How Long Cards Last

Most cards run five to eight years of normal use before anything fails, and plenty last well beyond that. Cards are usually replaced because they can no longer run current software well, not because they have broken.

Heat and dust shorten it more than anything else. Ex-mining cards are an interesting case: they tend to be in better condition than people expect, because steady load at moderate temperatures is gentler than repeated heating and cooling. When they do fail it is usually the power section or the pads, not the processor.

There are not many places doing genuine graphics card repair in Sydney, which is why people travel further for it than they would for a laptop screen. Can a graphics card be repaired?

In most cases yes. Cards normally fail because one component on the board has given out, not because the whole thing is finished. Replace that part and the card works again. The exception is the processor degrading internally, which is not economically repairable on any card.

Is it worth repairing a graphics card?

It depends on the fault and what the card is worth. Cooling work is worth doing on almost anything. Power and memory faults make sense on mid range cards and above. Processor faults rarely make sense on anything. We give you that assessment before you commit, including when the answer is no.

How do you fix a card that has failed?

It depends entirely on which part failed. Power section faults mean replacing MOSFETs or rebuilding a phase. Memory faults mean replacing chips and retesting. Cracked joints mean reflow or reball work. Firmware faults mean reprogramming the flash chip. The diagnosis determines the method, which is why the assessment comes first.

Is a reflow just a temporary fix?

Sometimes, and we will say so before you pay. A cracked joint that reflows properly can last years. A processor degrading internally will fail again no matter what we do, and in that case we tell you to replace the card rather than take your money.

What warranty do you give on the repair?

12 months on parts and labour, on every graphics card repair. Most board level shops offer 90 days. If the fault we repaired returns inside that year, bring it back and we sort it out at no charge.

How often do repairs actually work?

Around nine in ten cards we take on go home working. The main reason it is that high is that we assess first and decline the ones we do not think will hold — a degrading graphics processor gets sent home rather than reballed. Will this void my warranty?

If the card is still under manufacturer warranty, use that first — it will be cheaper. This is for cards out of warranty, bought second hand, already opened, or where the RMA was knocked back.

Do you work on laptop graphics chips?
