Lismore Graphics Card Repair by Post

A graphics card that has quit on you in Lismore stands a fair chance of being repaired, just not in Lismore. Flood, heat and outages in Lismore

2022 and the water

The February 2022 flood was a disaster for Lismore. On 28 February the Wilsons River peaked at about 14.4 metres, more than two metres over the 1954 benchmark and far above the 11.6 metres that topped the levee in 2017. Across the region, 4,055 properties were assessed as uninhabitable and 13 people died. Essential Energy counted 69,603 customers hit by outages; the South Lismore zone substation stopped working entirely, and the CBD's underground network was under water for days.

If a computer went under, please leave it off. NSW SES and Essential Energy both want anything that has been in floodwater inspected by a licensed electrician before it is used, and no repair bench stands in for that. Cards that spent time submerged are frequently beyond a sensible repair; the diagnostic will say which yours is.

Heat and humidity

Lismore runs hotter than the coast. Lismore Airport AWS (station 058214, 2002–2026) averages 30.2 °C in January, hits 35 °C on 11.1 days a year, and set its 42.8 °C record on 12 February 2017. The older Centre Street station (058037) puts January humidity at 74% at 9am and 58% at 3pm. In a hot, shut-up room a card has little cooling headroom; summer after summer its paste and pads dry out, and dust in the fins adds to it. Roaring fans at the desktop or frame rates that sag on hot afternoons point to a thermal service, from $330. July mornings average 6.2 °C, though, so let a card that arrived cold warm up before power-up, since condensation forms when cold hardware meets warm air.

Storms, outages and claims

On 8 July 2024 a transmission line near Lismore tripped, and that evening Essential Energy was directed to shed load: about 24,500 customers in Lismore, Ballina and nearby areas were off from about 6:34pm until close to 10pm. NSW SES says to switch off and unplug equipment once power is lost and, with severe weather on the way, to disconnect computers and gaming consoles. A surge can wreck a card's power stages; that repair is from $430.

Essential Energy, the distributor, does not generally reimburse storm damage and pays only for its own negligence, so begin with your home and contents insurer. Parcel Post and Express Post each come with $100 of cover. Past that, Australia Post charges $2.50 a step, each step being $100 of value or any part of it, stopping at $5,000, so a card you value at $2,900 costs 28 steps, $70 a leg, and Signature on Delivery ($2.95) becomes compulsory over $500. To claim you will need the lodgement receipt and proof of value, lodged within six months, and inadequate packing voids it. Sendle: $100 included, extra to $1,500. Packing and lodging in Lismore

1. Beat the heat. On a 35-degree afternoon a parked car gets far hotter than the card's usual room; go straight to the counter.
2. Waterproof the walk. October to March brings most severe storms, so carry the sealed box in a plastic bag until it is over the counter.
3. Two boxes, no rattle. Anti-static bag, at least 7 cm of cushioning (Sendle's number), a snug rigid box inside an outer box (Australia Post's method), then a shake test. "Fragile" stickers promise nothing; Aramex prefers plain boxes that do not advertise electronics. Card only, cooler on, job number in; leads, brackets and the retail box stay home.
4. Choose the return address. If street delivery out towards Nimbin, The Channon or Dunoon is unreliable, give us a PO Box. Add a prepaid return label, or we invoice return postage at cost.

When the retailer should hear about it first

A recently bought card belongs back with its retailer first. Under the Australian Consumer Law your guarantees stand apart from any warranty, which cannot pare them back. The seller deals with it and may not palm you off on the manufacturer; after a major failure, refund or replacement is your call. Misuse and private purchases sit outside. On third-party repair, the Federal Court in ACCC v Apple (2018) held that it does not by itself end the guarantees; a manufacturer's warranty may have its own conditions.

Is a graphics card from a flooded Lismore house worth repairing?
