GPU Repair Wollongong | Graphics Cards by Post or Drop-Off

When the graphics card in a Wollongong PC dies, begins artefacting or keeps overheating, it is often repairable, and an upgrade is not the only way out. We repair cards at component level, replacing the individual part that failed, at our workshop in the Hills District near Castle Hill. From the Illawarra that is a parcel away, or roughly an hour and 25 minutes up the road if you would sooner hand it over.

So there is no confusion: we have no shop in Wollongong, Shellharbour or Kiama. Repairs cost from $330. The bench diagnostic is $150 and disappears from the invoice if the job proceeds, and we stand behind each repair for a year, labour as well as parts. Getting the card up from the Illawarra

For Express Post, Australia Post groups Wollongong 2500, Dapto 2530 and Shellharbour 2529 into NSW Outer Metro, while Kiama 2533 falls into NSW Other, one band further out. Parcel Post treats the whole region as NSW Country. Estimates in business days, with two kinds of bench job:

The Illawarra's postcodes are not on Australia Post's list for next-business-day Express delivery, and only items posted inside that network are promised next-day arrival, with a postage refund if they miss. Bringing it up yourself

Google Maps gives about 1 hour 25 minutes from Wollongong to Castle Hill in light traffic, 97 to 118 km depending on the route, and more in peak hour. Before you give up on a dead card

A Wollongong search for GPU repair is dominated by one large multi-store PC shop, on its website and social media, with mobile technicians, a national chain and Reddit threads from locals asking what to do about a dead GPU filling the rest. That shop's gaming PC page lists GPU diagnostics and repair, but publishes no prices, no warranty and no board-level method; its social posts talk about micro-soldering on motherboards. The national chain's GPU page claims component-level repair, again with no prices.

An upgrade is sometimes the right call. On a cheap or ageing card, $150 plus postage in both directions can outweigh what the card is worth, and we say so on the phone before anything is sent. On a dearer card, one failed component is worth pricing before you buy a replacement. Whoever you ask, find out four things: does the shop repair at board level or only swap cards; does it publish prices; how long is its warranty; and what is the bill for a card it cannot save. Local help makes more sense when the card is still under warranty (the retailer first), when the fault might sit in a driver, a lead or the screen, or when the card sits at the budget end. Checks worth running at home first are in the GPU artefacting guide.

Illawarra weather and what it does to a card

The Bureau of Meteorology's Bellambi station, on the coast in the northern suburbs, records mild summers: 25.0 °C is the mean January maximum and only about 10 days a year get to 30 °C, though it reached 43.7 °C on 1 January 2006. January's 3pm humidity averages 72%, and 1148.5 mm of rain falls in a typical year. Salty, damp coastal air is hard on electronics generally. Heat still ages the paste and pads under a cooler, and dust still blocks the fins, so a card that runs hot and throttles is usually a thermal service job, from $330.

Heavy weather is where the region stands out. Over 17 and 18 August 1998, 445 mm of rain fell at Mt Ousley and 316 mm at Wollongong in 24 hours. One person drowned at Bellambi, fifty homes flooded in north Wollongong, and winds of up to 92 km/h brought down lines and cut power to thousands of homes. On 2 September 2024, damaging winds left more than 44,000 homes and businesses on the Endeavour Energy network without power, the Illawarra among the named areas, and on 1 and 2 July 2025 more than 17,000 Endeavour customers lost supply, Kiama included.

A surge can burn out the power stages that regulate a card's supply, and fixing those is priced from $430. Between September and April, NSW SES storm season, the SES tells households to pull computers and gaming consoles off the wall socket before a severe storm arrives, and Endeavour says the same about computers. If a PC has been in floodwater, leave it switched off: both SES and Endeavour want a licensed electrician to look over water-affected appliances first. Cards that have sat in floodwater are frequently not worth fixing, and the diagnostic will show that, but it never takes the place of the electrician.

Endeavour Energy runs the Illawarra network, and it warns that claims may be declined for events beyond its control such as severe storms and lightning. Your home and contents insurer is the first stop. The written diagnosis and quote we send record exactly what failed and the price to fix it, which is what an insurer tends to want on file; the claim decision is theirs, not ours. Parcel Post and Express Post carry $100 of cover already, and Extra Cover charges $2.50 per further $100 or part of it, with $5,000 as the most it will insure. With a card you value at $1,400, the $1,300 above the included amount is 13 steps of $2.50, or $32.50. Past $500 in value, Signature on Delivery ($2.95) is also compulsory. Service and cover are your choice for each direction.

Five checks before the card leaves the Illawarra

Kiama adds a day. Postcode 2533 is in a slower Express band than Wollongong, so allow as many as three business days for it to arrive.
Box inside a box. Australia Post suggests a snug, rigid inner carton with cushioning around it inside the outer one; "Fragile" written on the side protects nothing.
Shake before you seal. Sendle's rule of thumb: bag it anti-static, surround it with 7cm or more of cushioning, and make sure nothing moves when shaken.
Nothing on the outside says graphics card. Aramex recommends a plain box. Inside: the card with its cooler on and your job number, and no cables, brackets or retail box.
A PO Box is fine for the return. Just say so on the form.

Worth knowing: the Post Office receipt matters, and so does evidence of the card's value. Without both, a claim to Australia Post goes nowhere; the window is six months, and inadequately packed items are not paid out. Sendle bundles $100 of cover and will sell you more, to a $1,500 ceiling, and CouriersPlease's built-in cover does not apply to electronic devices.

Recently bought cards go back to the retailer

Australian consumer guarantees apply to a card bought new from a business, and a manufacturer's warranty only adds to them. With a major failure, a refund or a replacement is your pick, and the seller has to handle it rather than send you chasing the manufacturer. Misuse and second-hand private purchases fall outside. The ACCC's action against Apple ended in the Federal Court in 2018 with penalties totalling $9 million, and a finding that an independent repair does not, simply by happening, wipe out the guarantees. For a card that is only months old, try the shop or the warranty before booking a repair.

Questions

My GPU died. Is it better to just upgrade?

Sometimes. If the card is old or was cheap to begin with, the $150 diagnostic plus postage both ways may cost more than it is worth, and we will say that on the phone. On a recent mid-range or high-end card, a failed power stage (from $430) or memory chip (from $530) is usually worth pricing first. Ring 0400 454 859 for a free rough answer before you buy anything.

Does Express Post from Wollongong arrive the next day?

Sometimes, but not with a guarantee. Wollongong's postcodes are outside Australia Post's next-business-day Express network, so there is no next-day promise and no postage refund if it runs late. Australia Post's estimate from 2500 is one to two business days up to us and a single day back; from Kiama 2533, allow up to three coming up. By Parcel Post, expect three to four days in each direction.

Can a flood-damaged graphics card be repaired?

Occasionally, but be ready for a no. First, do not power up a PC that has been in floodwater; SES and Endeavour Energy advise getting a licensed electrician to check flood-affected appliances before use, and our work does not replace that. Many cards that have been under water turn out not to be worth the repair. The $150 diagnostic will tell you which it is.

What are the signs of a dying graphics card?

Blocks of colour, stripes or garbled textures on the screen, often a memory fault. Fans that spin up hard and then nothing, which points at the power stages. No picture at all, crashes only in games, or a card that runs hot and throttles. Check the cable, monitor and drivers first; corruption that shows at the BIOS screen, before drivers load, points at the card itself.
