GPU Repair for Dubbo and Western NSW

Your graphics card can be repaired from Dubbo; it just is not repaired in Dubbo. It goes in the post to Sydney's Hills District, roughly 400 km away, where our workshop near Castle Hill fixes it at component level. The failed power stage, memory chip or connector is found on the bench and replaced, and the rest of the card is left alone.

The cheapest repairs run from $330. Before any quote there is a $150 diagnosis, and that fee is waived when you approve the repair. A year's warranty on parts and labour applies to every job. Post from Dubbo: the Rural zone and what it means

This is where Dubbo differs from Orange or Bathurst. Australia Post places 2830 in its NSW Rural zone for Express Post, with an estimate of 2–3 business days each way. For Parcel Post, Dubbo is NSW Country: 3–4 business days each way. So Express saves roughly a day in each direction from here, not two or three.

Take a thermal service posted Express on a Monday: the card could be back in Dubbo somewhere between the following Monday and the Thursday of that week. A power stage or memory job adds 2–5 business days to that, and a reball more again. Allow a little time for you to approve the quote.

Express Post's next-business-day guarantee is limited to Australia Post's Express network, which does not reach Dubbo. Here, Express buys Australia Post's faster estimate and nothing more; if the parcel takes three days, that is inside the estimate and nothing is refunded. Oddly, a few towns nearby are quicker on paper. Wellington (2820), Geurie (2818), Mudgee (2850) and Gulgong (2852) are NSW Other for Express, with Australia Post estimating 1–3 business days inbound and 1–2 outbound. Narromine (2821), Gilgandra (2827), Nyngan (2825) and Broken Hill (2880) share Dubbo's NSW Rural figures. Every one of them is 3–4 business days by Parcel Post, in either direction.

Who fixes computers in Dubbo, and where GPUs fit

Dubbo has long-running computer shops, and they lead the search results. Around them sit a national onsite network's suburb pages, directories, and a shopping-mall phone shop that offers a 12-month warranty and a mail-in service, though only for phones, tablets and laptops. None of them mentions graphics card or board-level repair or lists a GPU price. A Reddit thread asking where a dead GPU can be fixed sits on page two, a sign that people here have gone looking and come up short.

A Dubbo shop remains the practical choice for an inexpensive card, for trouble that could be drivers or software, or for a card the retailer's warranty still covers. When a shop offers to look at a graphics card, the useful questions are these:

• Can you repair components on the card, or is replacement the only option?
• What do you charge, at minimum, for GPU work?
• How many months does your warranty on the repair run?
• If it cannot be fixed, what happens, and what do I pay?

Heat, dust and hail in the Orana

BoM's Dubbo Airport AWS puts the January mean maximum at 33.7 °C. It counts 31.9 days a year reaching 35 °C and 4.8 reaching 40 °C, and its record, 46.1 °C, came on 11 February 2017. Mean 3pm humidity in January is 32%. For a graphics card that means a long season of high temperatures inside the case. Heat dries out thermal paste and pads, and once they go, the card runs hotter and throttles. A thermal service, from $330, replaces both.

Dust matters as much. On 19 January 2020 a haboob dust storm rolled over Dubbo with a 107 km/h gust at 7:45 pm; one resident described "zero visibility in less than a minute". Fine dust that gets into a case settles in the cooler fins and chokes the airflow. After a dust storm, clean the filters; if the card still runs hot, book a thermal service.

Storms bring the power problems. In the same event, Essential Energy confirmed that high winds and lightning caused widespread blackouts across the Central West. On 9 February 2023, golf-ball hail, 100 km/h gusts and up to 54 mm of rain in an hour left more than 10,000 properties without power and traffic lights dark across town. A surge can kill the power stages on a card, and power stage repair starts from $430. By NSW SES reckoning, storm season lasts from September to April, and October to March brings roughly nine-tenths of severe thunderstorm activity. The SES tells households to pull the plugs on PCs and consoles ahead of a severe storm, and Essential Energy gives the same advice for computers.

If floodwater ever reaches the PC, leave it off. Official advice is to have it checked by a licensed electrician first, and a repair workshop is no replacement for that check. A card that has sat in floodwater is often not economic to repair; the diagnostic will say.

Repair prices, identical to our Sydney drop-offs

Cover works in steps. The first $100 is part of any Parcel Post or Express Post item. After that, Extra Cover costs $2.50 per step, one step per $100 of value or part of $100, and stops at $5,000. A $2,100 card sits 20 steps past the included amount, so $50. Signature on Delivery is $2.95 and is compulsory over $500. Postage is separate and yours to choose, both ways. For an Australia Post claim you need proof you lodged it, proof of the card's worth, a claim made inside 6 months and adequate packing; miss any of those and the claim can be refused.

Every desktop GeForce and Radeon is fair game, Palit, Gainward, Inno3D and PNY boards included. Radeon RX 6000 to RX 9000 and GeForce RTX 30 to RTX 50 cards are the ones that most often justify the postage.

Packing for the trip east

• Keep it out of the heat. On a 40 °C day, a boxed card should not wait in a parked car or on a hot veranda before lodgement. Take it straight to a counter and hang on to the lodgement receipt.
• Rural delivery or a PO Box: tell us, and we will address the return to your PO Box so it waits at the Post Office for you.
• Pack for the distance. Anti-static bag, a close-fitting rigid box, then an outer carton padded 7cm or more on every side; then a shake test. "Fragile" stickers do not stop damage.
• Card only, in a plain box. Cooler fitted; no cables, brackets or retail packaging.

Check the consumer guarantees first

For a card bought not long ago, the retailer should hear about it before we do. Australian Consumer Law guarantees stand regardless of the manufacturer's warranty, which may add to them but cannot reduce them. For a major failure you choose between refund and replacement, and the shop that sold it must deal with you directly rather than point you at the manufacturer. The guarantees do not stretch to misuse or private sales. The Federal Court found in ACCC v Apple (2018) that a third-party repair does not, simply by happening, end those rights, but the retailer is still the first stop.

What are your phone hours in Broken Hill time?

Broken Hill runs on Central time, half an hour behind Sydney. Our phones are staffed 8am–6pm Sydney time, Monday through Saturday, which on a Broken Hill clock is 7:30am–5:30pm. Both observe daylight saving, so the gap stays at half an hour all year. For postage, Broken Hill 2880 shares Dubbo's NSW Rural Express zone: 2–3 business days each way.

How many days does a posted card take between Dubbo and Castle Hill?

From 2830, Express Post is estimated at 2–3 business days into Sydney and Parcel Post at 3–4, with the same figures for the trip home. They are estimates, not promises: 2830 is not in the next-business-day Express network. Bench time comes on top: a thermal service needs 1–2 days, a reball as many as 5–10.

Do Dubbo summers and dust storms wear out a graphics card?

Over time, yes. Hot summers dry the compound and pads under the cooler, and dust packs the fins, so the card runs warmer year by year. Dubbo Airport records 31.9 days of 35 °C-plus in an average year. We replace paste and pads in a thermal service, from $330, normally one of our 1–2 business day jobs.

Is it worth fixing an older card, or should I just replace it?

The card's value decides it. One that would fetch about two hundred dollars used rarely justifies a $150 diagnostic plus postage from Dubbo and back, and we tell people that over the phone. Recent cards, RTX 30-series and later or RX 6000-series and later, are the ones where repair most often wins. Ring 0400 454 859 for a free opinion before you post.

Can the repaired card come back to my PO Box?

Yes. We can send it to a PO Box just as easily as to a home address, which suits anyone on a rural delivery run or away during the day. Say which when you fill in the form. Return postage goes either on a prepaid label you put in the box or on the invoice at cost, and the card leaves once the invoice is paid.
