Graphics Card Repair for the Blue Mountains

Graphics cards from the Blue Mountains can be repaired at component level on our bench in the Hills District, about 1 hour 10 minutes' drive from Katoomba. You can bring the card down or post it, and from here the two are close to equal, because the Mountains sit in the same Australia Post zone as the workshop. Either way we track down the part that failed and replace it, rather than condemn the card.

We are not in the Mountains, and there is nowhere in Katoomba or Springwood to leave a card for us. The terms are simple: repairs from $330, a $150 bench diagnostic that is waived once you approve the repair, no work until you accept a fixed quote, and twelve months' warranty on what we fix, labour included. Why the Mountains post like Sydney

Postcodes 2740 to 2786, Glenbrook and Lapstone up to Mount Victoria, belong to Australia Post's Sydney Metro zone for both Express Post and Parcel Post. Our postcode does too. On Australia Post's estimates, a card from Katoomba 2780 travels as quickly as one from a Sydney suburb. For a power stage or memory repair, in business days:

Unlike almost all of regional NSW, the Mountains fall inside the next-business-day network for Express Post, and so does our end. Express from Katoomba, Leura or Springwood therefore carries the next-business-day guarantee, provided you follow its rules:

• Post on a weekday, at a Post Office counter or in a yellow Express Post box before its last clearance. Yellow boxes generally close at 4pm, but times vary, so read the box.
• Red street boxes and Parcel Lockers are out: lodging there cancels the guarantee.
• Should a guaranteed item turn up late, Australia Post hands back the postage; there is no other compensation.

Lithgow is a different case. Postcode 2790 is outside the network and in NSW Other for Express, estimated at one to three days to us and one to two back, with no guarantee; Parcel Post counts it as NSW Country, three to four days in each direction. Katoomba to Castle Hill is about 1 hour 10 minutes and 88 km on Google Maps with light traffic, and longer in peak hour. Cards are taken in by arrangement, 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday. Little to find locally, and what to ask

Search for GPU repair in the Blue Mountains and very little of use comes up: general computer shops in Katoomba and Springwood, blog posts from a Lithgow gaming PC shop, national chains and a long tail of irrelevant pages. No Mountains business puts a GPU repair service, a price or a warranty on its website, and one Springwood shop lists GPU upgrades only.

Local shops are the right people for a slow PC, software trouble or fitting a new card. For a card that has actually failed, ask these four questions, whoever you are considering:

Use the manufacturer's warranty first if the card is still inside it. If the trouble might be a driver, a display cable or the monitor, or the card sits at the cheap end of the second-hand market, stay local; posting would cost more than it saves. Altitude, cold nights and wind: Mountains conditions

Katoomba sits at about 1,040 m. The Bureau of Meteorology's Katoomba (Farnells Rd) station, at 1,017 m, records 37.3 nights a year at 2 °C or lower and 10.5 at 0 °C or lower. July's mean minimum is 2.6 °C. For a graphics card, the risk is the warm-up: hardware carried from cold air into a heated room can collect condensation. A card that spent a winter night in the car, a shed or a parcel should come up to room temperature before anyone switches it on.

Summers at the top are mild, with a January mean maximum of 23.4 °C and 0.6 days a year reaching 35 °C. Springwood and Glenbrook sit lower and run warmer. Heat, even at altitude, gradually dries the thermal paste and pads, and household dust packs the cooler fins, showing up as a card that runs hot and throttles: a thermal service, from $330.

Recent outages here have come with wind. On 2 September 2024, over 44,000 of Endeavour Energy's homes and businesses lost power in damaging winds, the Blue Mountains among the areas named. In the windstorm of 1 and 2 July 2025, gusts passed 120 km/h in places and more than 17,000 Endeavour customers lost power, the Mountains again on the list. The NSW SES storm season covers September to April, and both the SES and Endeavour advise unplugging computers and gaming gear ahead of severe weather. A surge can wreck the power stages on a card; putting those right is priced from $430.

Endeavour Energy supplies the Mountains and Lithgow, and warns that it may decline claims for events beyond its control, naming severe storms and lightning. Home and contents insurance is usually the better first call. The diagnosis and quote we email record the failed part and the cost of the fix, which is the paperwork insurers and networks look for. Whether anyone pays out is not something we can promise, though a network's refusal can be taken to EWON for review.

Australia Post's Parcel and Express services each carry up to $100 of cover built in. Beyond it, Extra Cover is $2.50 for every $100 or part of $100, with $5,000 the most you can cover. A card you value at $900 has $800 uncovered, eight lots of $2.50, so $20. And because $900 is above $500, the $2.95 Signature on Delivery option stops being optional. You set the service and cover for each leg.

Posting from Katoomba, Springwood or Lithgow

• Lodge Express at the counter or a yellow box on a weekday to keep the guarantee; a Friday parcel is due on the Monday.
• A PO Box works for the return trip if that is how you get your mail. Put it on the form.
• Pack it the way the carriers recommend: a snug, rigid box nested inside another with cushioning (Australia Post), an anti-static bag with 7cm or more of padding and a shake test (Sendle), and a plain outer box (Aramex). A "Fragile" label does not do the job for you.
• Send the card alone, cooler attached, job number enclosed.

Check the warranty and the shop first

With a fairly new card you may not need us. The consumer guarantees give you rights against the business that sold it, whatever the manufacturer's warranty says, because a warranty adds to those rights and cannot subtract from them. When the failure is a major one, refund or replacement is your call, and the retailer must sort it out itself rather than hand you over to the manufacturer. Private-sale goods and misuse are not covered. Nor does a later repair by someone else automatically end the guarantees; the Federal Court said as much in the ACCC's 2018 case against Apple, where penalties reached $9 million.

Questions

Is Express Post guaranteed next day from the Blue Mountains?

Yes, from postcodes 2740 to 2786, if you follow the rules. The Mountains and our workshop both sit within the network where Australia Post guarantees next-business-day Express. Lodge it on a weekday at a Post Office or in a yellow Express Post box before clearance, not a red box or a Parcel Locker. A late guaranteed item earns a postage refund, nothing more. Lithgow 2790 is outside the network.

My PC lives in a cold room in Katoomba. Can that hurt the card?

Cold on its own is not the issue; the change is. Carrying hardware out of the cold into a heated room lets condensation form on it, so if the card or PC has been somewhere freezing, give it time to reach room temperature before powering up. Katoomba's weather station averages 37.3 nights a year at 2 °C or below, so this applies for much of winter.

Can a GPU that shows no sign of life be brought back?

In many cases. Cards usually die because one component gave out, a MOSFET in the power section, a memory chip, a connector, while the graphics processor itself is fine. Replace that part and the card runs again. The exception is a processor failing internally, which is not worth repairing on any card. The $150 diagnostic tells you which you have before you spend more.

Can you post the repaired card back to a PO Box?

Yes. We can address the return to your PO Box or your street address, whichever suits; note it on the form or when we email your job number. You choose the return service and cover, and either tuck a prepaid label inside the box or let us bill the return postage at cost on the invoice.

Does Lithgow get the same postage times as Katoomba?

No. Lithgow 2790 and Wallerawang 2845 sit outside Sydney Metro. Express Post puts them in NSW Other: up to three business days coming to us, up to two going back, and no next-day guarantee. Parcel Post puts them in NSW Country, with an estimate of three to four days each way. Driving down through the Mountains is the other option.
