Graphics Card Repair for Newcastle and the Hunter

Graphics cards from Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley can be repaired at component level, and the work is done at our Castle Hill-area bench in the Hills District. You can post the card to us, or bring it down yourself: Newcastle is roughly two hours away by road. We find the one part that gave out and replace it; the rest of the card carries on.

We have no premises in Newcastle. You pay from $330 for a repair, the $150 diagnostic is knocked off if you approve the work, and each repair carries a 12-month warranty that covers labour as well as parts. Newcastle to the Hills District: post it or drive it

In Australia Post's estimator, Newcastle 2300 and the Lake Macquarie postcodes count as NSW Outer Metro for Express Post. Maitland 2320 and Cessnock sit in NSW Other, a step further out, and so do Raymond Terrace and Nelson Bay on Port Stephens. For Parcel Post, every one of them is NSW Country. Taking a memory chip replacement as the example, counted in business days:

The postal figures are Australia Post estimates; quote approval and payment add their own time. No part of the Hunter is inside the Express Post next business day network that Australia Post runs, and the next-business-day guarantee only exists inside it. From a Newcastle or Maitland Post Office, Express buys a quicker estimate but no guarantee, and no postage refund if the parcel takes two days instead of one. Driving down

By Google Maps in light traffic, Newcastle to Castle Hill is about 2 hours (144 to 150 km) and Maitland about 1 hour 55 minutes; peak hour at either end makes it longer. Drop-offs happen by arrangement. Fill in the form or phone first, and the address arrives by email with your job number; we are open 8am to 6pm, Monday through Saturday. The local option, and what to ask it

Newcastle's results are mostly local PC shops, plus a national chain's long run of suburb pages. One Newcastle workshop does stand out: it explicitly claims board-level repair on graphics cards. It charges a $60 diagnosis or deposit fee and quotes after it has looked at the card. It does not publish GPU prices or a warranty term, and it does not offer a postal service. We have not seen its work and make no claim about it. If you would rather hand a card over a counter in Newcastle, it is a sensible first call, and its diagnosis costs less than ours.

Elsewhere in the results, one shop replaces graphics chips on laptops and a Charlestown shop charges $88 for in-store diagnostics. No Newcastle business publishes board-level graphics card prices. Before you leave a card anywhere, ask:

1. Will you repair the failed part on the board, or tell me to replace the card?
2. Roughly what does this kind of fault cost before any work starts?
3. What warranty comes with the repair, for how long, and is it in writing?
4. If you cannot fix it, what is my total outlay?

Ours: we repair at component level, list from-prices below, warrant the work for 12 months, and charge $150 plus return postage when a card is beyond saving. Hunter weather and the faults it leaves

At the Bureau of Meteorology's Newcastle Nobbys Signal Station, January averages a 25.6 °C maximum and 72% humidity at 3pm. Nobbys is right on the coast, so suburbs further inland run warmer; even so, it logs 14.9 days a year of 30 °C or above, and it hit 42.5 °C on 18 January 2013. Heat slowly dries out the paste and pads that carry warmth off the chips, and dust clogging the cooler adds to it. Damp, salty air near the beaches is hard on electronics in general. An overheating card usually needs a thermal service, from $330.

In June 2007 the storm during which the bulk carrier Pasha Bulker ran aground at Nobbys Beach dropped more than 300 mm of rain on the Hunter and left more than 105,000 homes across the storm region without power. When the East Coast Low of April 2015 arrived, roughly 240,000 Ausgrid customers were cut off at its peak, and Newcastle and the Upper and Lower Hunter were among the worst hit. A surge can destroy a card's power stages; repairing those starts from $430. Storm season, according to the SES, is September to April, and its advice is to unplug computers and gaming consoles before the weather turns.

Ausgrid is the Hunter's network. Its compensation covers damage from an incident on its own network, rules out events outside its control, has a $5,000 ceiling, wants evidence such as photos and repair reports, and points you to your insurer first. What we email after the bench test, the fault found plus a costed quote, is the kind of evidence insurers and Ausgrid both ask for, though no one can promise a claim will succeed. If Ausgrid says no, EWON can review it.

What the repair costs

Post or hand delivery, the from-prices are identical; the diagnostic sets the fixed quote.

A card you value at $2,000 is $1,900 over the $100 of cover that Parcel Post and Express Post include. Extra Cover is charged at $2.50 for each $100 or part-$100 beyond that, up to $5,000 in total, so 19 lots of $2.50 comes to $47.50 per trip. A $2.95 Signature on Delivery charge is compulsory for anything valued above $500. Both legs are yours to pick and pay for, service and cover alike.

Sending a card from the Hunter

Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens: add a day. NSW Other postcodes are estimated at up to three business days by Express into Sydney, and up to two for the return.

Photograph it before it goes in the box. If a storm caused the damage, Ausgrid lists photos among the proof it wants.

Pack it the way the carriers suggest. Australia Post: one snug, rigid box inside another, cushioned between, with no faith in a "Fragile" label. Sendle: anti-static bag, at least 7cm of padding, then shake it to check nothing moves. Aramex: a plain outer box that does not advertise electronics.

Lodge over the counter. Keep the receipt, and something proving the card's value. Australia Post claims need both, have a six-month limit, and are not paid on an item that was not adequately packed.

Newer cards and your rights

Under the Australian Consumer Law, a warranty is an extra layered over the consumer guarantees and cannot take them away. When a new card suffers a major failure, you decide between a refund and a replacement, and you claim from the business that sold it, which must deal with you itself instead of pointing at the maker. Cards damaged by misuse or bought privately are outside the guarantees. The Federal Court's 2018 judgment in ACCC v Apple, with $9 million in penalties, held that fixing a product through someone else does not by that fact cancel them. Even so, if your card is recent, go to the retailer or the warranty first, not to us.

Questions

There is a board-level repairer in Newcastle. Why would I post my card to Sydney?

You may not need to. If the local workshop can fix your card and its terms suit you, staying in Newcastle saves the postage. The differences are on paper: we publish a from-price for each type of repair, put 12 months of cover on the repair, and accept cards by post. It publishes no GPU prices or warranty term. Ask it about both before deciding either way.

How many days does the post take between Newcastle and your workshop?

Australia Post estimates one to two business days by Express from Newcastle 2300 to our Sydney Metro postcode, and one day for the return. Maitland 2320 and Cessnock are a zone further out: Express is estimated at up to three days in and up to two back. Parcel Post is three to four days each way from anywhere in the Hunter. None of those times is guaranteed.

Can a Hunter storm kill a graphics card?

It can. A surge during a storm can take out the power stages that feed the graphics processor, leaving a card that will not start, or one whose fans spin up before it cuts out. Power stage work starts from $430. Unplug the PC before severe weather, as NSW SES advises, and check your home and contents policy first; our written diagnosis records what failed.

My card's 12VHPWR plug has melted. Is it finished?

Usually not. A melted 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 power connector is connector work, from $370: the damaged plug is removed, the surrounding board is inspected for heat damage, and a fresh connector is fitted. If the damage reaches further than the plug, the diagnostic will find it and the quote will say so before you commit to anything. Post the card without its power cable.

Is repairing a dead card better value than replacing it?

The answer turns on the card's value and on what failed. A thermal service from $330 makes sense on most cards. Power stage and memory faults, from $430 and from $530 respectively, suit mid-range cards and up, such as GeForce RTX 30-series and later, or Radeon RX 6000 and later. On a cheap older card, the diagnostic plus postage can exceed its value, and we will tell you so on the phone.
