Graphics Card Repair for Tamworth, by Post

A graphics card that has died in Tamworth can usually still be repaired, even though no business in town advertises that work. You post it to our Hills District workshop, a short way from Castle Hill, where we have repaired circuit boards since 2006. We find the component that gave out, be it a power stage, one memory chip or a scorched connector, and replace it alone.

Prices begin from $330, after a $150 diagnostic that disappears from the bill if you proceed, and the completed repair is guaranteed for 12 months, parts and labour both. Postcode 2340 falls in Australia Post's NSW Other zone when you send Express, and in its NSW Country zone when you send Parcel Post. Figures are Australia Post's estimates in business days; the bench row assumes a thermal service, since heat is what a Tamworth summer does best.

A repaste sent Express both ways should be home in three to seven business days, plus however long the quote waits for your answer; Parcel Post makes it about seven to ten. Swap the repaste for a power stage or memory job and the bench row becomes three to seven days; a reball takes five to ten.

No Express guarantee from Tamworth

Australia Post promises next-business-day delivery only inside its Express Post network, and no postcode in the North West or New England belongs to it. Express from Tamworth still gets the quicker estimate, but a three-day trip is within the rules, with no refund to claim. What a Tamworth search turns up

When we searched for graphics card repair in Tamworth in September 2026, Google's first page was padded out with council fee schedules and government PDFs. "GPU repair" brought up general IT and custom-build shops, national onsite networks, directories, a Reddit thread on GPU repairs and a Whirlpool thread titled "GPU repair Sydney". No Tamworth business advertised graphics card or board-level repair. The closest thing to a GPU specialist was our own Sydney page, down on page two.

Ask any repairer, us included:

• Will you repair the card at component level, or is the fix a replacement card?
• Is there a published starting price for this kind of fault?
• What warranty, in months, covers the repair, and is labour part of it?
• If it cannot be fixed, what will I have paid in total?

Stick with a Tamworth shop if the card cost little, if drivers or Windows could be to blame, or while the card is still young enough for a warranty claim. A shop with a spare card can also rule the card in or out before you pay for postage.

Tamworth heat, storms and frosts

The Bureau of Meteorology's Tamworth Airport station (055325) records a mean January maximum of 33.1 °C, with December at 31.0 °C and February at 31.7 °C. It logs 27.1 days a year that reach 35 °C, and on 12 February 2017 it reached 45.9 °C, its highest on record. A PC in a room like that breathes hot air all afternoon, and over a few summers the paste dries and the pads harden until the card throttles or crashes under load. The cure is a thermal service, from $330. Dust matted into the cooler fins makes it worse.

Storms bring a different failure. The severe thunderstorm that hit just before 4 pm on 26 November 2025 brought winds above 125 km/h, and wind, lightning and falling trees brought down lines; outages peaked at about 8,000 customers that evening, worst in North Tamworth, Westdale and Taminda. A mains surge can destroy the power stages supplying a card's core and memory, leaving a card that will not power up properly; that repair starts from $430. Storm season, as NSW SES defines it, is September to April, and its 2023 report on storm risk says about 90% of the state's yearly severe thunderstorm activity lands between October and March. Unplugging the computer before severe weather arrives is the advice from both SES and Essential Energy.

Winter swings the other way. The same station averages 27.6 days a year when it drops to 0 °C or below, and July's mean minimum is 2.4 °C. If a card has spent the night in a cold car or shed, let it reach room temperature before you fit it and switch on, because warm room air meeting a cold board can leave condensation.

Essential Energy runs the network here and pays for damage only where its own negligence caused it. Storms are outside its control, so a surge claim normally starts with your home and contents insurer, and both want paperwork: its claim form wants copies of repair invoices, quotes or an electrician's report, and our emailed diagnosis and quote records what failed and what it costs to put right. If a network turns down a claim, EWON, the energy and water ombudsman, can be asked to review it. We cannot promise how a claim will end.

Prices, the same for Tamworth as for Sydney

Every repair price is a floor; the diagnostic fixes the quote, and no work starts without your go-ahead. Parcel Post and Express Post both include $100 of cover; Extra Cover is $2.50 per extra $100 of value, with a part of $100 counted as a whole one, to a maximum of $5,000. Insure a card you value at $3,600 and, after the included $100, $3,500 remains: 35 lots, or $87.50 per parcel. Anything valued above $500 must also go with Signature on Delivery, which costs $2.95. If the card proves unrepairable, or you turn the quote down, you pay the $150 and the return postage and get an explanation of what failed.

We take desktop NVIDIA and AMD cards whoever built the board, from ASUS and MSI to Palit and XFX; RTX 30, 40 and 50 cards and the Radeon RX 6000–9000 range are the ones most often worth fixing. Posting a card from Tamworth

• Straight to the counter in summer. Do not leave the parcel in a parked car on a 35 °C afternoon.
• Keep the lodgement receipt. Guarantee or not, the counter gives you the proof of lodgement a claim needs. Keep proof of the card's value too, and lodge any claim inside six months.
• Pack for up to four days on the road. Anti-static bag, a snug rigid inner box, then an outer box with 7cm or more of padding on every side. Shake it and listen. Australia Post pays nothing on a card it finds was not adequately packed.
• Mind the courier's limits. Sendle's extra cover stops at $1,500, well short of a card you value at $3,600, and CouriersPlease leaves electronic devices out of its included cover.

A card still under warranty

If the card is recent and you bought it new from a business, go back to that retailer before posting it anywhere. Under the Australian Consumer Law, a major fault means you choose whether to take a refund or a replacement, and the shop must handle it itself instead of pointing you to the manufacturer. The maker's warranty is extra, never a substitute. None of this covers misuse or a card bought privately, which is where a paid repair makes sense.

Questions

Does anyone in Tamworth repair graphics cards at board level?

Not that we could find. In our September 2026 search, no Tamworth business advertised graphics card or board-level repair, and none published a GPU price or warranty. The local computer shops handle builds, upgrades and general repairs, and they are a sensible first stop for driver trouble or a card still under warranty. For a failed power stage, memory chip or connector, posting the card to our workshop near Castle Hill is the practical option, with repairs from $330.

How long will my card be away from Tamworth?

For a thermal service sent Express both ways, allow three to seven business days between posting and getting it back, on Australia Post's estimates, plus the time it takes you to say yes to the quote. Could a thunderstorm surge have killed my graphics card?

Is it better to repair my card or buy a new one?

That depends mostly on what the card is worth. For a recent RTX or Radeon card, repairs start from $330 and even a reball starts from $630, which often compares well with replacing it, and the repair carries 12 months' warranty. For a card that would sell for a couple of hundred dollars, postage from Tamworth plus the $150 diagnostic usually tips the balance the other way.
