RTX 4080 and 4080 Super Faults We Repair

Faults on a 4080 or 4080 Super come from five places: the 16-pin power input, the power stages, the GDDR6X memory, the firmware, or physical damage to the board. The symptom tells the bench where to start looking.

What you seeWhere diagnosis usually startsTypical repair

RTX 4080 vs RTX 4080 Super: What Differs for Repair

The 4080 Super is the same AD103 chip with every core enabled and slightly faster memory, on a board very close to the original, so for repair purposes the two cards are close relatives. Igor's Lab, comparing the two Founders Edition cards, found that apart from the chip and a few details "pretty much everything has remained the same".

What that means on the bench:

  • Memory and connector work are identical: same memory type, capacity and bus, same 16-pin input, same 320W rating, same prices.
  • Power-stage parts follow the board. NVIDIA trimmed the Super Founders Edition's power design (PC Games Hardware and Igor's Lab both report the memory supply dropping from three phases to two), and partner boards vary far more.
  • Firmware is matched to the exact card. The GPUs are different versions of AD103, and we never load the other model's BIOS.
  • The Super is the younger card. It may still be under warranty; check who to contact first.

Which RTX 4080 Do You Have?

If the label on the card, the box or GPU-Z says RTX 4080 or RTX 4080 Super with 16GB, this is the right page; a few other cards are easy to confuse with them.

  • "RTX 4080 12GB": NVIDIA withdrew it on 14 October 2022, before sale, saying it was "not named right". The design (AD104, 7,680 cores, 12GB on a 192-bit bus) went on sale in January 2023 as the RTX 4070 Ti. A 12GB card is not a 4080; see RTX 4070 Ti repair.
  • RTX 4070 Ti Super: also 16GB on a 256-bit bus, but a lower model. Give us the exact name when you enquire.
  • RTX 4090: its Founders Edition shares the 4080's cooler and looks almost identical, but carries 24GB; see RTX 4090 repair.
  • Laptop "RTX 4080": the chip is soldered to the laptop's mainboard, so it is a laptop board level repair.

RTX 4080 16-Pin Power Connector: Seating, Melting and Repair

Both cards take all their external power through one 16-pin connector, and a scorched or melted socket on the card can be replaced from $370 as long as the circuit board under it is still sound.

  • Late 2022: melting reports centred on the RTX 4090. NVIDIA said it knew of about 50 cases and that a common issue was connectors not fully plugged into the card. Tom's Hardware had not heard of similar 4080 problems at the time.
  • March 2025: Tom's Hardware covered a Reddit report of a Gigabyte RTX 4080 Aero OC whose adapter melted at its 8-pin plugs, on an ATX 2.3 power supply from 2016. The damage stayed at those 8-pin plugs.
  • Margin: Tom's Hardware notes that the 4080's 320W sits well inside the connector's 600W maximum, more headroom than the highest-power cards have.

Seating matters because, as Igor's Lab teardowns of several 4080 and 4080 Super boards show, the connector's 12V pins are measured in groups through current-sense resistors and then merged into one supply. As Tom's Hardware explains, a card that cannot see individual pins cannot detect one pin making poor contact.

The original socket is called 12VHPWR. The revised 12V-2x6 socket, which NVIDIA moved to during 2023, has shorter sense pins and slightly longer power contacts, so the sense pins only connect once the plug is fully home. The same cables fit both, and a replacement socket is matched to your board.

Checks for owners:

  • Push the plug in until there is no gap and the latch clicks.
  • Keep the cable straight for a few centimetres from the plug.
  • With an adapter, run each 8-pin plug from its own power supply cable, and be wary of an old power supply.
  • Unplug the connector only when you need to.
  • Retire any cable or adapter whose plug has browned or melted, and check its power supply end too.

How a melted socket is repaired:

  1. The socket and 12V input are inspected under magnification and the input measured to ground for shorts.
  2. The board is preheated from below, since the heavy copper around the input soaks up heat, and the socket is removed.
  3. The through-holes are cleaned and the board checked for charring. Burning into the inner layers rules out a reliable repair.
  4. A new socket of the correct type is fitted, and the current-sense resistors, any fuses and the sense-pin circuitry are checked.
  5. The card is powered up current-limited, then run at full load with its power draw logged.

Keep photos of the melted plug to share with us; only the card comes to the bench.

RTX 4080 GDDR6X Memory Layout and Repair

The RTX 4080 carries its 16GB as eight 2GB Micron GDDR6X chips around the GPU on one side of the board, and the Super keeps the same 16GB, 256-bit arrangement, so a failing chip can be traced and replaced individually from $530.

  • One chip per channel: the 256-bit bus is split into eight 32-bit channels, one per chip, so a memory test that reports a failing channel points at one chip.
  • Nothing on the back: all the memory sits under the main cooler. Tom's Hardware measured the Founders Edition's memory peaking at 52°C, so very high memory temperatures on a 4080 suggest a fitting problem, such as wrong pads after an earlier repaste.
  • Parts: the new chip must match the originals in type, capacity and speed grade, and availability is confirmed before you approve the quote.

The replacement process:

  1. Memory is tested cold and warm to find the failing channel.
  2. With the board preheated and nearby parts shielded, the chip is lifted with controlled hot air.
  3. The pads are cleaned and levelled and the new chip fitted.
  4. All eight chips are retested, and thermal pads renewed at measured thicknesses.

RTX 4080 Artefacting

Artefacts on a 4080 or 4080 Super, such as coloured blocks, lines, sparkles or flicker, most often lead back to a GDDR6X chip, the supply that feeds the memory, or a weak joint under the GPU or a chip. When they appear says a lot:

When the artefacts showWhat it usually points to
Straight away, on the motherboard logo or BIOS screenThe card itself: memory, memory power or joints
Only after some time in a gameA chip or joint that fails as it warms, or a supply that drifts under load
In one game or after a driver change, and not with another cardSoftware or settings, not the card
On one screen or one output onlyThe cable, the monitor or that output

Try the checks in our GPU artefacting guide before sending anything.

Founders Edition and Partner RTX 4080 Boards

NVIDIA's Founders Edition 4080 puts the 4090 Founders Edition's cooler on a short, shaped board, while partner cards from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, Palit, Zotac, KFA2 and others each use their own board and power design. Parts, pads and firmware follow the exact model.

Founders EditionPartner boards
Size and weight304 x 137 x 61mm, triple-slot, about 2.1kgVaries; many are longer and heavier
CoolerSame as the 4090 Founders Edition: vapour chamber and two fans in NVIDIA's flow-through designEach maker's own; KFA2's 4080 SG uses three fans and eight heat pipes
Power designFewer phases on the Super's board, whose stages are rated to 70A each (Igor's Lab)Varies: MSI's 4080 Suprim X has eight core phases with two stages each; KFA2's 4080 SG uses 55A stages
Power inputOne 16-pin, with a three 8-pin adapter in the boxOne 16-pin; Palit's 4080 Super GamingPro OC board has unused space for two 8-pin sockets
BIOSReprogrammed with the correct file if corruptedSome have two BIOS chips and a switch, such as the MSI 4080 Suprim X

A card that went dark after a BIOS flash usually has healthy hardware. On a dual-BIOS card, try the other switch position first; otherwise we rewrite the BIOS chip in place with the right file for that exact card, from $330.

Heavy Cards and PCIe Slot Damage

RTX 4080 cards are heavy, around 2.1kg for the Founders Edition, so damage around the PCIe slot connector after a knock, a move or long-term sag is one of the physical faults diagnosis looks for.

  • Reported: in June 2023 TechSpot covered Louis Rossmann relaying an independent repairer's reports of cracks near the PCIe locking tab on several Gigabyte RTX 30 and 40 series cards. In February 2024 Guru3D reported that Gigabyte had enlarged the board around the tab on its RTX 4080 and 4090 Gaming OC cards (v1.1), with its new 4080 Super models using the updated board.
  • Checked on the bench: hairline cracks at the slot end, broken traces, knocked-off parts, worn contacts, and a full PCIe 4.0 x16 link.
  • Repairable: missing parts, contacts and surface traces, from $370. A crack through the inner layers usually is not.
  • Prevention: a support bracket, and the card removed before the PC is moved or posted.

RTX 4080 Thermal Service

A thermal service from $330 is worthwhile on a 4080 that has become louder or hotter for the same workload, but fans that sit still on the desktop are normal, not a fault. Club386 reported that the Founders Edition keeps its fans stopped until the GPU reaches 60°C; partner cards set their own fan-stop behaviour.

  • Signs it is due: higher GPU or hot spot temperatures than when new, fans ramping harder, clocks falling in long sessions, dust in the fins, a rattling fan.
  • Why now: the first 4080s went on sale in late 2022, so the oldest are nearly four years into their original paste and pads.
  • What it covers: full strip, fins and fans cleaned, fresh paste, pads at measured thicknesses, fan bearings checked, and a logged load run.

RTX 4080 No Display

A 4080 whose fans turn but which puts nothing on screen usually has a failed power stage, damaged firmware or a fault on the output side, and those are generally repairable when the AD103 core itself is healthy. Re-seat the 16-pin plug and try a different output and cable first.

What the PC doesWhere to look
Sees the card in Device Manager, black screenFirmware, memory, or the output circuitry
Does not see the card at allA supply that is not starting, or damage at the PCIe edge connector
Sees it on some starts onlyA joint or part that is sensitive to heat or flex, or a marginal supply

Fans spinning proves only that the 12V input is live, not that the core and memory supplies are.

RTX 4080 Power Stages and Short Circuits

When a 4080 goes dark or trips the power supply, diagnosis looks early at the power stages on the core and memory supplies, and replacing a failed stage starts from $430. A power stage packages the switching MOSFETs and their driver together, and when one fails it often fails short.

  • Finding it: with normal power off, each supply is measured to ground, then a small current-limited feed and a thermal camera show which part is taking the current.
  • 12V input short: the power supply cuts out the moment the PC starts. A stage or input capacitor is the usual find, and the 16-pin socket is checked for heat damage.
  • Core or memory supply short: fans may spin while the card stays dark. A stage or capacitor is repairable; a short inside the GPU itself is not economical.
  • Proving it: neighbouring parts and the controller are checked, each supply is started current-limited, and the card is held at full load.

If the power supply clicks off every time the card is fitted, stop trying. Each attempt can damage more parts and make the repair dearer.

RTX 4080 Crashes and Shutdowns Under Load

When a 4080 crashes or switches the PC off only under load, the cause is the card's power delivery, a fault that shows with heat, or the power supply and cabling feeding the card. Check the last one first:

  • Power supply: TechPowerUp suggests 700W for an RTX 4080, and Corsair notes most makers recommend at least 750W for either card. An old unit running an adapter is a prime suspect.
  • The plug: any browning on the 16-pin plug or the adapter's 8-pin plugs means that cable is finished.
  • Temperatures: high readings during a crash run point to cooling; normal ones point to power or the board.

A card that passes every bench test costs you the $150 diagnostic, and the results show the problem lies elsewhere in the system.

How an RTX 4080 Is Diagnosed

Diagnosis runs from checks that cannot cause harm to the more invasive ones, using only the steps your symptom calls for.

  1. Look: both sides under magnification, including the 16-pin socket, the slot end and signs of earlier work.
  2. Measure cold: the 12V input and each supply to ground, unpowered.
  3. Power up limited: a capped bench supply, so a fault cannot spread.
  4. Check supplies and firmware: voltages in start-up order; the BIOS read where relevant.
  5. Test memory: all eight chips, cold and warm.
  6. Reproduce heat faults: the card run hot, or one area warmed at a time.
  7. Quote: the fault, the repair, a fixed price and whether it is worth doing. Nothing proceeds until you approve.
  8. Repair and prove: rebuild with measured pads and fresh paste, then a logged load run.

Can an RTX 4080 or 4080 Super Be Repaired?

Most faults on these cards can be repaired at board level, because the part that fails is usually something around the AD103 chip rather than the chip itself. Repairs we carry out:

  • Melted or damaged 16-pin sockets
  • Failed power stages, controllers and capacitors
  • GDDR6X memory chips, subject to the correct chip being available
  • PCIe edge connector damage and dead display outputs
  • Corrupted or mismatched firmware
  • Worn paste and pads, tired fans

When a 4080 Repair Does Not Make Sense

A failed or cracked AD103 core, charring that has burnt into the board, or several major faults at once can make a 4080 uneconomical to repair.

  • A dead or cracked GPU core. The only fix is a donor core from another card, which adds cost and risk. In warranty, it is a warranty claim; out of warranty, replacing the card usually makes more sense.
  • Burning through the board under the 16-pin socket. A new socket on charred inner layers is not a reliable repair at 320W.
  • A crack through the inner layers, for example at the slot end after a heavy knock.
  • Multiple memory chips failing alongside power damage.
  • An earlier repair attempt gone wrong, for example pads torn from the board under a memory chip.

You find out after the diagnostic. You pay the $150 and any return postage, nothing else, and you get an explanation of what failed.

RTX 4080 and 4080 Super Repair Cost

Repairs on either card start from $330, with the exact price set in a quote after diagnosis and before any work. The 4080 and the 4080 Super are priced from the same list.

WorkPrice
Bench diagnostic$150, waived if you go ahead with the repair
Thermal service: paste, pads, cleaningFrom $330
Firmware and BIOS recoveryFrom $330
16-pin socket, port, PCIe contact and trace repairFrom $370
Power-stage repairFrom $430
GDDR6X memory chip replacementFrom $530, subject to the correct chip being available
Reflow or reballFrom $630, quoted per card

Call 02 8428 9224 with your card's model and the fault for a starting price. If you post the card, postage both ways is yours to choose and pay.

Is an RTX 4080 Worth Repairing?

Usually, yes: a 4080 or 4080 Super is still a high-end 16GB card, so most out-of-warranty repairs cost well under what a working one sells for. Compare your quote with recently sold listings for the same model, not asking prices.

  • Repair usually wins for a socket, a power stage, firmware, a thermal service or a single memory chip, on a card that is out of warranty or bought second hand. A second-hand replacement has no known history, while the parts replaced here are covered for 12 months for the same fault.
  • Repair may not win if the card is still under warranty (see below), the core has failed, the board is burnt or cracked through, or several faults add up to a large share of its value. We say so after the diagnostic.

As an illustration: if working 4080s are selling for around $1,200 near you, a socket replacement from $370 or a power-stage repair from $430 leaves a wide margin.

Still Under Warranty? Start With the Retailer

If your 4080 or 4080 Super is still inside its manufacturer's warranty, take it back to the retailer you bought it from before paying for any repair. The 4080 Super only went on sale on 31 January 2024, so many Super cards bought new are recent enough to check.

  • Find your receipt date and look up the warranty period for your card's brand.
  • Your consumer guarantee rights under the Australian Consumer Law sit with the retailer. The ACCC says these guarantees are separate from any warranty and may still apply after the warranty has expired.
  • If the claim is declined or expired, or the card was bought second hand, we can diagnose and quote it.

RTX 4080 Repair Turnaround

Bench time for a 4080 or 4080 Super ranges from one business day for firmware or thermal work to ten for physical damage.

Repair typeUsual bench time
Thermal service, firmware recovery1–2 business days
Power-stage and memory repairs3–7 business days
Reball, slot-end and other physical damage5–10 business days
Faults that only show when warmLonger, because the fault must be reproduced before it can be traced

Parts on order depend on supply, and you are told before you approve. For transit times, see the interstate GPU repair page.

What Happens After the Repair?

Every repaired 4080 is proven on the bench before it leaves, and you get a plain account of what failed and what was replaced. It must link at full PCIe width and speed, drive all four outputs and finish a long load run with temperatures and power draw logged.

When the invoice is settled, collect the card by arrangement, or it is posted back on your prepaid label or with return postage added to the invoice at cost.

Warranty: 12 months on the parts we replace, for the same fault. If a replaced part fails and that fault returns within the year, the part is covered. After a socket repair, use a new cable, fully seated and unstrained.

Typical RTX 4080 Repair Scenarios

These are fault patterns seen on graphics cards like the 4080 and 4080 Super, with what diagnosis usually finds and what the repair involves. Your card may differ, so it is diagnosed and quoted on what the bench finds.

Melted 16-pin socket on the card

What you see
A hot plastic smell mid-game, then a black screen. The plug is browned and one corner of the socket has softened.
What diagnosis usually finds
Heat damage to the socket housing and some pins from a poor contact; no short on the 12V input, and the board beneath only discoloured on the surface.
The repair
The socket is removed with the board preheated, the through-holes cleaned and inspected, and a matching new socket fitted. Current-sense and sense-pin circuitry are checked.
Price and bench time
From $370; bench time depends on how far the heat damage reaches
Before it goes back
Current-limited power-up, then a long full-load run on a new cable with power draw logged.

Melted cable plug, but the card's socket is undamaged

What you see
The plug on the cable or adapter has melted, and the owner has stopped using the card to be safe.
What diagnosis usually finds
Socket pins straight and clean, no heat damage to the housing or board, and the card passes load testing on a new cable. The damage stayed on the cable side.
The repair
None needed on the card. The cable or adapter must be replaced, and the power supply end checked.
Price and bench time
The $150 diagnostic plus any return postage
Before it goes back
A written note of what was checked and passed.

Fans spin, no picture, card not detected

What you see
Fans and lighting work, but the screen stays black and the motherboard does not see the card.
What diagnosis usually finds
The core supply never comes up. Measurements and thermal imaging trace it to a power stage that has failed short.
The repair
The stage is replaced with a matching part, and the rest of that supply is checked.
Price and bench time
From $430, usually three to seven business days
Before it goes back
Current-limited start, then a sustained full-load run.

Artefacts from the moment the PC starts

What you see
Coloured specks and lines on the motherboard logo, before Windows loads, getting worse in games.
What diagnosis usually finds
Memory testing reports errors on one 32-bit channel, which points to a single GDDR6X chip.
The repair
The chip is replaced with a matching GDDR6X part, once the correct chip is confirmed available, and all eight chips are retested.
Price and bench time
From $530, usually three to seven business days
Before it goes back
Memory testing cold and hot, then a long load run.

Louder and hotter than it used to be

What you see
An early 4080 that now runs its fans hard in games that used to be quiet.
What diagnosis usually finds
Dried, pumped-out paste on the GPU, hardened pads and dust packed into the fins.
The repair
Full strip and clean, fresh paste, pads at measured thicknesses, fan bearings checked.
Price and bench time
From $330, usually one to two business days
Before it goes back
GPU, hot spot and memory temperatures logged through a long load run.

Not detected after the PC was moved

What you see
After a house move with the card left in the PC, it is not found, or only on some starts.
What diagnosis usually finds
Small parts knocked off near the PCIe edge connector and a scuffed contact, with no crack through the board.
The repair
Missing parts replaced, contacts repaired and cleaned, the slot end checked for cracks under magnification.
Price and bench time
From $370; physical damage usually takes five to ten business days
Before it goes back
The PCIe link confirmed at full width and speed, then a load run.

PC shuts down in games, but the card tests fine

What you see
The whole PC switches off in demanding games. The card runs from an adapter on an older power supply.
What diagnosis usually finds
The card holds every supply, passes memory testing and completes a long full-load run. The likely cause is the power supply or its cabling.
The repair
No repair is carried out on the card.
Price and bench time
The $150 diagnostic plus any return postage
Before it goes back
A written summary of the tests and what to check next.

Core supply short traced to the GPU itself

What you see
No picture, and the card is not detected.
What diagnosis usually finds
The core supply is shorted, but every power stage and capacitor on it tests good once lifted. The short is inside the AD103 core.
The repair
Not economical: the core could only be replaced from another card. If the card is in warranty, it goes back to the retailer.
Price and bench time
The $150 diagnostic plus any return postage
Before it goes back
A written explanation of the finding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an RTX 4080 or 4080 Super be repaired?

In most cases, yes. Melted 16-pin sockets, power stages, GDDR6X memory chips, display outputs, PCIe contacts and firmware can all be repaired at component level. A failed AD103 core, charring through the board or several major faults together may rule it out. The $150 bench diagnostic, waived if you proceed, settles which.

My RTX 4080's power connector melted. Can the card be fixed?

Usually. If the damage is limited to the socket and the board surface, the socket is replaced from $370 and the card load-tested on a new cable. If heat has burnt into the board's inner layers, a reliable repair is not possible, and the diagnostic tells you so. Replace the melted cable or adapter either way.

How do I stop the 16-pin connector on my 4080 melting?

Push the plug fully home until there is no gap and the latch clicks, keep the cable straight for a few centimetres from the plug, and limit how often you unplug it. With an adapter, run each 8-pin plug from its own power supply cable, and consider replacing an old power supply. Retire any cable whose plug has browned.

Is a 4080 Super repaired differently from a 4080?

Very little. Both use the AD103 chip, 16GB of GDDR6X on a 256-bit bus, a single 16-pin connector and a 320W rating, so memory and connector work are the same and prices are the same. Power-stage parts and firmware are matched to the exact card, because the Super's board and GPU version differ slightly.

How much does an RTX 4080 repair cost?

A thermal service or firmware recovery starts at $330, a 16-pin socket, port or trace repair at $370, a power stage at $430 and a GDDR6X memory chip at $530, subject to the right chip being available. Reflow or reball starts at $630. The $150 diagnostic is waived if you proceed. Call 02 8428 9224 for a starting price.

What warranty comes with an RTX 4080 repair?

Twelve months on the parts we replace, for the same fault. If a replaced part fails and that fault returns within the year, the part is covered. An unrelated fault is a new job and is quoted on its own.

My 4080 Super is still under warranty. Should I send it to you?

Go to the retailer first. Your consumer guarantee rights under the Australian Consumer Law sit with the retailer, and the ACCC says those guarantees can still apply after a manufacturer's warranty has ended. If the claim is declined, the card was bought second hand or the warranty has run out, we can diagnose and quote it.

Why don't the fans on my RTX 4080 spin?

Often because they are not meant to. The Founders Edition keeps its fans stopped until the GPU reaches about 60 degrees, and partner cards set their own fan-stop behaviour. If the fans stay still while the GPU temperature keeps rising under load, a fan, its connection or the fan controller needs checking.

Is there an RTX 4080 12GB?

Not as a product you can buy. NVIDIA withdrew the RTX 4080 12GB in October 2022 before it went on sale, and the design was released in January 2023 as the RTX 4070 Ti. If your card has 12GB, it is not a 4080; our RTX 4070 Ti page covers it.

How long does RTX 4080 repair take?

Thermal and firmware jobs usually take one to two business days, power-stage and memory repairs three to seven, and reball or physical damage five to ten. Heat-dependent faults add time, as does postage if you send the card.

Can I post my RTX 4080 from interstate?

Yes. Once you have a job number, send the card by itself with its cooler on, in an anti-static bag, boxed with at least 5cm of padding. You choose and pay for postage both ways. The return goes on your prepaid label, or its postage is added to the invoice at cost.

Is an RTX 4080 still worth repairing?

Usually. It is still a high-end card with 16GB of memory, so a socket, power-stage, firmware or single-chip repair normally costs well under what a working card sells for. Compare your quote with recently sold prices for the same model, not asking prices. Several major faults together may change the answer.

Are you the computer store at HomeCo Castle Hill?
