Graphics Card Repair for Perth, Posted to Our Sydney Bench

Yes. A faulty graphics card can go in the post from Perth to our Sydney workshop and be repaired at component level: we find the one part on the board that failed, such as a memory chip, a power stage or a burnt-out connector, and fit a new one, so the card itself is saved. Prices begin from $330. We charge $150 for the bench diagnostic and deduct it from the invoice when you approve the repair, and the finished work carries a 12-month warranty covering parts and labour.

Be clear on the geography: we have no Perth premises of any kind. The bench is in the Hills District of north-west Sydney, near Castle Hill, where we have done board work since 2006, so your card crosses the continent twice. Perth to Sydney and back, in business days

The postal legs use the July 2023 edition of Australia Post's Domestic Delivery Estimator, the newest one published, for parcels bound for Sydney Metro (postcodes 2000 to 2234, our workshop among them). They are estimates, not guarantees. The bench row assumes a thermal service, one to two business days of work.

Your own turnaround adds to that: nothing is repaired until you approve the quote, and the card ships once the invoice is paid. Bigger faults add bench days: power stage and memory jobs need three to seven, reballs and physical damage five to ten, and an intermittent fault takes longer, since it has to be reproduced before it can be chased down. Ordered parts depend on supply.

The Express Post guarantee stops at the Perth CBD

Express Post's next-business-day guarantee operates only inside its network of capital cities, and for Perth that means the CBD alone. An Express parcel lodged in Joondalup, Rockingham or Midland still travels Express, estimated at two business days, but without the guarantee. To stay covered, lodge in the CBD between Monday and Friday while the Post Office is open. Yellow Express Post boxes also count, though most close around 4pm and times differ. Red street boxes and Parcel Lockers both void the guarantee, and nothing is delivered on a public holiday.

What Perth's search results offer, and what to ask any repairer

Search for graphics card repair in Perth and the top spot goes to a Reddit discussion, not a business. One local shop prices the work at $295 to $550, calls the chance of success 50/50 and offers a 90-day warranty. Several others describe themselves as component level yet list only cleaning, repasting or swapping in a new card, with warranties anywhere from 30 days to a year.

Some of them will suit some jobs. Whoever you choose, us included, ask:

• Do you replace failed components, such as power stages and memory chips, or only paste and pads?
• Will I get a fixed price before the work, or a range that firms up afterwards?
• What is the warranty period, and are parts included as well as labour?
• What do I owe if the card turns out to be unrepairable?
• Will you tell me if the card is not worth the money?

Our side of it: components, yes, reball work included; a fixed quote after diagnosis; a year on parts and labour; $150 plus return postage; and yes, before you post. A card that resells for a couple of hundred dollars is rarely worth a return trip from WA.

When a Perth shop is the better choice

If the card only needs its cooler cleaned and repasted, a capable local shop spares you the postage both ways. The same applies when you are unsure the card is the culprit: someone nearby who can test another card in your PC, or yours in another PC, will answer that faster than the post can. Perth summers and what they do to a graphics card

Bureau of Meteorology records give Perth a mean maximum of 29.6°C in December, 31.4°C in January and 31.7°C in February. That February average is the highest of any Australian capital, a shade above Darwin's 31.5°C. It is an outdoor figure, not the temperature inside your case, but a card breathing warm room air all summer spends more hours near its thermal limits. The first casualties are the materials that carry heat away from the chips:

• Paste and pads. Paste dries and pads harden, so the cooler no longer presses evenly on the core and memory. Expect fans that never settle, clocks sagging mid-game and a wide gap between hotspot and core temperatures. A thermal service, from $330 and one to two bench days, can be the whole fix when overheating is the only fault.
• Hot memory. Artefacting that starts only once a game has warmed the card can be memory overheating through worn pads (a thermal service) or a failing chip (replacement from $530). The diagnostic tells us which.

If your card only misbehaves when the weather turns hot, say so on the form. It is a useful clue.

Prices for cards posted from Perth

A posted card is charged exactly what a card handed over at our Sydney workshop is charged. Each figure is a floor that becomes a fixed quote once the diagnostic has pinned down the fault.

You arrange insurance on both legs. Parcel Post and Express Post items each carry cover of up to $100. Extra Cover lifts that in $100 steps at $2.50 a step, to a ceiling of $5,000, so a card valued at $3,300 needs 32 steps, or $80, per parcel. Over $500 in value, Signature on Delivery is compulsory as well, at $2.95. The return is its own parcel with its own cover, bought on the prepaid label you include or by us at cost on your invoice. A claim needs your lodgement receipt and proof of value, and Australia Post pays nothing on a parcel that was not adequately packed.

Packing for the long haul east

Parcel Post from Perth is estimated at three to five business days, and only Darwin's estimate is longer. Pack for the whole journey.

• Rigid box, snug fit, box-in-box. Card in an anti-static bag, inside an inner box, surrounded by at least 7cm of cushioning inside a stronger outer box. Shake the finished parcel; any movement means more padding. A "Fragile" label protects nothing on its own.
• A plain outer carton. Do not reuse a box printed with a graphics card, monitor or PC brand. It advertises the contents to everyone who handles it.
• Pick your Post Office on purpose. For the Express guarantee, lodge over the counter in the CBD. From the suburbs, Express is still estimated at one to three business days quicker than Parcel Post, only without the guarantee.
• Post early in the week. The estimates count business days only, so a parcel lodged late in the week has a weekend added to its trip.
• Mind the time difference. Our phone hours of 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, are Sydney time: 6am to 4pm in Perth, or 5am to 3pm while NSW is on daylight saving. The form takes requests at any hour.

Newer cards start with the shop that sold them

If your card is fairly new and failed in normal use, your first stop is the retailer, not our bench. The Australian Consumer Law puts the seller first in line: the retailer handles the claim and cannot pass you on to the maker. If the failure is a major one, the choice of refund or replacement is yours. These consumer guarantees sit on top of any manufacturer's warranty, cannot be cancelled by it and can outlast it. They do not extend to damage from misuse or to a card bought privately, which is usually where a paid repair comes in.

Is Express Post next day from Perth to Sydney?

Only from the CBD, and even there Australia Post's own estimate is one to two business days. The next-business-day guarantee applies to the Perth CBD and nowhere else in the metro area, where Express is estimated at two business days with no guarantee. For a CBD parcel, lodge between Monday and Friday while the Post Office is open, and avoid red street boxes and Parcel Lockers. A late guaranteed parcel earns back its postage, nothing more.

What are the odds my graphics card can be fixed?

We do not give odds, because a percentage says nothing about your particular card. What decides it is the part that failed, and finding that part is what the $150 diagnostic is for. Power stages, memory chips, damaged connectors and corrupted firmware can all be replaced or recovered at component level. If the fault is not worth paying to fix, we say so, and you pay the diagnostic plus return postage and nothing else.

How do I fix a broken graphics card?

Rule out the simple causes first. Reseat the card, check the power cables are pushed fully home, try a different display cable and monitor, and reinstall the driver. If the fault survives all of that, the problem is on the board, and fixing it means locating the failed component with test equipment and replacing it. That is bench work, not a home job.
