Yes. Nobody in Hobart's search results does board-level graphics card repair, but the card can cross Bass Strait by post to our bench in Sydney's Hills District, near Castle Hill, where we have worked on circuit boards since 2006. We repair at component level: the one part that failed, whether a MOSFET, a GDDR6 memory chip or a damaged power connector, is found and replaced, and the card you already own keeps working. Prices start from $330.
The $150 diagnostic is waived if you approve the repair, the quote is fixed before any work starts, and the repair is covered for 12 months on parts and labour. The workshop is in Sydney, not Tasmania, and nobody collects cards in Hobart for us. The bench accounts for most of that spread. Firmware and thermal jobs need one to two business days, work on a reball or physical damage takes five to ten, and a fault that comes and goes takes longer again, because it has to be caught in the act before it can be found. Parts on order depend on supply. Allow for your own time too: the repair waits for your approval, and we post the card home after the invoice is settled.
Express Post guarantee from Hobart
Australia Post guarantees next-business-day delivery for Express parcels moving between capital cities inside its Express network, and Hobart to Sydney is one of those runs. Darwin sits outside the guarantee and Perth only qualifies from its CBD, but Hobart is covered; if you are posting from well outside the city, ask at the counter whether your postcode is included. Hand the parcel over the counter on a weekday before closing, or use a yellow Express Post box ahead of its clearance time, often about 4pm but it varies. Posting through a Parcel Locker, or into one of the red street boxes, cancels the guarantee. A late guaranteed parcel gets its postage refunded and nothing more, and no deliveries are made on public holidays.
Worth knowing: We do not publish the workshop's street address. You get it by email, together with a job number, once you have filled in the form or rung us, so wait for that email before you seal the box.
The Hobart repair market, and the questions worth asking
Search for graphics card repair in Hobart and the results are general PC shops that will replace a card or install a new one. A national chain's page advertises graphics card replacement from $89, backed by a 14-day workmanship guarantee. None of them offers board-level repair, and that is not a criticism: replacement takes the faulty card out and puts another in, while repair keeps your card and fixes the part that failed.
Before you hand a faulty card to anyone, ask:
- Is my card being repaired, or swapped for a different one?
- Can you replace components on the board, such as power stages, memory or a damaged connector?
- Will I have a fixed price before the work starts?
- How long is the guarantee, and does it cover the parts as well as the work?
- What will I have paid if the card turns out to be beyond repair?
From us, in the same order: repaired, not swapped; yes; yes, once the diagnostic is done; a year's warranty covering parts and labour; and the $150 diagnostic plus return postage.
When a Hobart shop is the right place to start
Staying local makes sense if what you want is a new card fitted, or if the fault might lie elsewhere in the PC. A shop with spare parts can try another card in your PC, or rule out the power supply, before you pay to post anything across Bass Strait. One whose resale value is a couple of hundred dollars rarely justifies the diagnostic plus two crossings of the strait, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than take the job.
A cool climate, and the faults it does not prevent
By Bureau of Meteorology figures, Hobart's mean maximum is 20.4°C in December and 21.8°C in both January and February. That is the mildest summer of any Australian capital, and about ten degrees below Perth in February. Summer heat is therefore a less likely explanation for a Hobart card's problems than for one on the mainland. None of the faults below depends on the weather, though:
- Dust in the cooler. Dust and fine particles in the room get pulled through the case and settle in the heatsink fins and fans. A card running hot in a cool house points to the cooler, or to aged paste and pads, rather than the climate. Thermal service, from $330.
- Power stage failures. The card lights up, the fans race, then it shuts down, because a MOSFET or power stage has failed. From $430.
- Memory faults. Coloured blocks, lines or corrupted textures, which can point to a failing GDDR6 or GDDR6X chip. From $530.
- Melted power connectors. A 12VHPWR or 12V-2x6 plug that has overheated where it meets the card. From $370.
- Failed BIOS updates. A card that went dark part way through a firmware update. From $330.
What a repair costs from Hobart
A card that arrives by post from Tasmania is charged the same as one carried into our Sydney workshop. These are starting prices, and the diagnostic turns yours into a fixed quote.

On insurance: every Parcel Post or Express Post parcel includes up to $100 of cover. Extra Cover costs $2.50 for every further $100, up to $5,000, so a card worth $1,700 needs 16 lots, or $40, on the trip north, and the same again coming home if you want the return covered. Signature on Delivery ($2.95) becomes mandatory once the value is above $500. If a claim is needed, the sender claims for loss and the recipient claims for damage, taking the card and packaging into a Post Office to show them, within six months and with proof of lodgement and proof of value.
Sending a card across Bass Strait
Australia Post's estimate for Parcel Post out of Hobart is three to five business days, compared with two to three from Melbourne. Those extra days are spent in transit, so the packing has to last the distance.
- Lodge over the counter. It keeps the Express guarantee intact and gets you the proof of lodgement that any claim needs.
- Box inside a box. A snug, rigid inner box holding the card in an anti-static bag, then 7cm or more of cushioning on every side inside the outer box. Shake the finished parcel. Nothing should shift.
- Nothing on the outside that says electronics. Use a plain carton rather than one printed with a PC or graphics brand, and do not count on a "Fragile" sticker to protect it.
- Card only, cooler on. Leave the cables, support bracket and retail box in Hobart, since the repair does not need them, and pack the job number and your contact details with the card.

Under warranty or recently bought: claim first
On a card that is still new, use your consumer guarantee or the manufacturer's warranty before paying for a repair. Australian Consumer Law guarantees run alongside any warranty and can outlast it. The Federal Court's 2018 decision in the ACCC's action against Apple, where penalties reached $9 million, found that a repair by a third party cannot by itself extinguish those guarantees. That does not mean an outside repair never affects a manufacturer's own warranty, which is why the claim should come first. The guarantees do not reach cards bought privately or damage caused by misuse; for those, and for cards whose cover has run out, a mail-in repair is the next step.

By Parcel Post, yes. Australia Post estimates three to five business days from Hobart to Sydney Metro, against two to three from Melbourne, because the parcel has to get across Bass Strait. Express Post closes the gap: the estimate from Hobart is one business day, the same as Melbourne, and the next-business-day guarantee applies when you lodge it correctly. Allow about the same again for the card's trip home.
Should I repair my graphics card or replace it?
Set the likely repair price against what the card sells for second-hand, plus postage both ways from Tasmania. Thermal and firmware work, from $330, suit most cards worth posting. Memory and reball work, from $530 and from $630, need a more valuable card behind them. Recent cards, meaning GeForce RTX 30, 40 and 50 and Radeon RX 6000 through 9000, are where repair most often pays. A card with a resale value of a couple of hundred dollars usually is not worth it, and we will say so.
Can dust from a wood heater affect my PC?
Any dust and fine particles in the room air can end up inside a PC, wood heater or not, because the case fans draw that air through the machine. Over time it builds up in the graphics card's cooler, in the heatsink fins and around the fans, and a clogged cooler lets the card run hotter. Cleaning the case filters and clearing the cooler now and then helps. If the card still runs hot after that, a thermal service starts from $330.
