RTX 4090 Faults We Diagnose and Repair
Most RTX 4090 faults trace back to power delivery, memory, firmware or physical damage, and on this card the power input and the PCIe slot area deserve a closer look than usual. The quote always comes from what testing finds, not the symptom.
| Symptom | First place testing looks | Usual repair |
|---|---|---|
| Brown, warped or melted 16-pin plug or socket | The connector, the 12V input, shunt resistors, power stages | From $370 (connector); from $430 if a power stage failed too |
| Power supply trips the moment the PC starts | A short on the 12V input or a core or memory rail | From $430 |
| Fans spin, no picture | Power rails, firmware, display output circuitry | From $330 (firmware) or from $430 (power stage) |
| Not detected, or detected only some of the time | PCIe edge contacts, parts near the slot, board cracks | From $370 |
| Coloured blocks, lines or flickering textures | GDDR6X memory, memory power, cooler contact | From $330 (thermal) or from $530 (memory chip) |
| Hot, loud, throttling under load | Paste, memory pads, vapour chamber contact, fans | From $330 |
| Code 43 in Device Manager | Memory, firmware, power; sometimes software | From $330 |
| Stopped working after a water block was fitted | Knocked-off parts, pad thickness, a screw or tool short | From $370 |
RTX 4090 Melted 16-Pin Connector Repair
A melted 16-pin connector on an RTX 4090 can usually be replaced, from $370, but the repair is only finished once the 12V input and the power stages behind it have been checked. A connector that ran hot enough to melt may have damaged more than its own plastic.
The RTX 4090 takes its power through a single 16-pin connector (12VHPWR) instead of several 8-pin plugs; the Founders Edition uses one, and so do partner cards such as the ASUS TUF Gaming. Here is what the repair covers:
- Inspection. The socket, the board around it and the cable's plug are examined under magnification for melting, charring and pushed-back pins.
- Cold checks. The 12V input is measured for a short. On the Founders Edition, Igor's Lab's teardown shows the three 12V feeds passing through three current-sensing shunt resistors before they join, so those shunts and their traces are checked for heat damage.
- Removal. The damaged connector comes off and the pads are cleaned. Carbonised board material can conduct, so it is removed, not covered over.
- New connector. A new 16-pin connector of the correct type for that board is fitted and every pin checked.
- Power stages. A shorted or damaged stage found in the cold checks is replaced too, from $430, and added to the quote before you approve it.
- Load test. Full power on a known-good cable, with a thermal camera on the new connector.
Replace the melted cable or adapter as well, and check its other end at the power supply. A melted plug fitted to a new socket risks repeating the damage.
What Was Reported About the RTX 4090's 16-Pin Connector
Within weeks of the RTX 4090's October 2022 launch, owners began reporting melted 16-pin plugs, and the investigations that followed pointed mainly to plugs that had not been pushed fully home. The connector standard was later revised. The timeline:
| When | Who | What was reported |
|---|---|---|
| October 2022 | NVIDIA | The RTX 4090 Founders Edition launches with a single 16-pin 12VHPWR socket, and ships with an adapter that joins four 8-pin plugs into one 16-pin plug. |
| November 2022 | Gamers Nexus | Testing found that a partly unseated plug, especially one pulled at an angle, could overheat and melt, and that debris in the connector could contribute. Its conclusion: any 12VHPWR cable can fail under the wrong conditions. |
| 18 November 2022 | NVIDIA | About 50 cases known worldwide; a common issue was connectors not fully plugged into the card; an expedited RMA offered regardless of cable or card. |
| Mid 2023 | PCI-SIG | The CEM 5.1 specification replaced 12VHPWR with 12V-2x6: shorter sense pins and slightly longer power contacts, so a card should not draw full power from a plug that is not fully seated. Corsair says existing cables still fit. |
| July 2023 | KitGuru | Newer 4090 Founders Edition cards were reported with shortened sense pins. NVIDIA made no announcement. |
| February 2024 | US CPSC | CableMod recalled its V1.0 and V1.1 angled adapters after 272 reports of them loosening, overheating and melting into cards. |
For a working card:
- Seat the plug fully, with no gap at the socket and the latch engaged.
- Keep the cable straight for a short run before it bends, so it is not levering the plug sideways.
- Check with a torch rather than unplugging it. Gamers Nexus suggested repeated removal may have added debris or left plugs unseated.
- Using an angled adapter? Check it is not one of the recalled CableMod models.
RTX 4090 Memory Layout: How It Differs From the RTX 3090
The RTX 4090 holds its 24GB in twelve 2GB GDDR6X chips, all on one side of the board around the GPU, so it has none of the rear memory that runs hot behind an RTX 3090's backplate. That changes where thermal work on a 4090 is focused.
| RTX 3090 | RTX 4090 | |
|---|---|---|
| Total memory | 24GB GDDR6X | 24GB GDDR6X |
| Chips | Twenty-four 1GB chips | Twelve 2GB chips |
| Placement | Both sides of the board | One side only, around the GPU |
| Memory bus | 384-bit, chips in 16-bit mode | 384-bit |
| Memory speed | 19.5 Gbps | 21 Gbps |
| How the memory is cooled | Front chips by the main cooler; rear chips only through pads into the backplate | All chips by the main cooler; on the Founders Edition, directly by the base of the vapour chamber |
On the bench, that layout means:
- Memory heat is a front-side job. Hot memory points to the pads and contact under the main cooler, not the backplate.
- Pad thickness affects the GPU too. Memory and GPU share one cooler: pads too thick hold it off the GPU, pads too thin leave the memory without contact. Each gap is measured.
- Original pads are usually replaced. Igor's Lab described the Founders Edition's memory pads as thick and crumbly, and pads like that rarely survive a strip.
- Errors point to one chip. Twelve chips on a 384-bit bus give each its own 32-bit slice, so there is no front-or-rear pair to separate as on a 3090.
- The back still matters. A Founders Edition carries its power controller on the rear of the board.
For the older card's rear memory, see our RTX 3090 repair page.
RTX 4090 No Display Repair
An RTX 4090 that gives no picture is usually repairable if the AD102 GPU itself is healthy; the likely culprits are a failed power stage, damaged firmware, a fault near the PCIe slot or the output circuitry. What happened just before it stopped is often the best clue.
| What happened first | Where testing looks |
|---|---|
| A burning smell or discoloured power plug | The 16-pin connector, 12V input and power stages |
| The PC was moved, shipped or rebuilt | PCIe contacts, parts near the slot, board cracks |
| A water block or new pads were fitted | Knocked-off parts, pad thickness, a screw or tool short |
| A BIOS update | The firmware chip |
| Nothing: it simply stopped | Each power rail in turn, then memory and outputs |
Spinning fans need only 12V and a small fan controller, so they keep turning on a card whose core supply is dead.
RTX 4090 Artefacting
Artefacts on an RTX 4090, meaning coloured blocks, lines, sparkles or broken textures, usually come from one of the twelve GDDR6X chips, the memory's power supply or poor cooler contact. When they appear tells you more than how they look.
- On the boot screen, before Windows: a hardware fault on the card.
- Only once warm: a chip or joint failing at temperature, or memory too hot from poor pad contact.
- After a driver update, or also with another card: look at software and the rest of the PC first.
Artefacts straight after a home repaste or water-block fit often mean pads that are not touching. Our GPU artefacting guide covers the checks to try at home.
RTX 4090 GDDR6X Memory Repair
A failed GDDR6X chip on an RTX 4090 can be replaced individually, from $530, provided the correct 2GB chip is available for that card. If the right chip has to be ordered, bench time depends on supply, and you hear about it before approving anything.
- Testing, cold and warm, finds the slice of the bus producing errors and the chip on it.
- The memory supply is checked, so a good chip is not replaced because of a bad supply.
- With the board preheated and neighbouring parts shielded, hot air at a controlled temperature lifts the chip.
- The pads are cleaned and levelled and a new 2GB GDDR6X chip of the correct type fitted.
- All twelve chips are retested under load, then measured pads and fresh paste go in.
A second chip, or a chip plus a power fault, is in the quote before work starts.
RTX 4090 Power Stage Repair
The RTX 4090 is rated at 450W, and the power stages that turn 12V into the core and memory supplies handle nearly all of it, so they are among the first parts checked on a dead card; repairs start from $430. A power stage, often called a smart power stage or DrMOS, packs the switching MOSFETs and their driver together.
- Founders Edition: NVIDIA described 20 power phases for the GPU and 3 for the memory. Igor's Lab's teardown identified MP86957 power stages, each rated up to 70A, run by an MP2891 controller on the back of the board.
- Partner boards: stage count and layout differ by maker, and replacement stages follow the board in front of us.
- After a melted connector: input-side stages are tested even if the card still starts.
The failed stage is located with a thermal camera, replaced with a matching part, and its neighbours, controller and capacitors checked. Each rail is then brought up current-limited before a sustained full-power run.
RTX 4090 Short Circuit Diagnosis
A shorted RTX 4090 is diagnosed without powering it normally: each rail is measured to ground with the power off, and the failed part on the shorted rail is then found with a thermal camera. That keeps a single failed part from becoming several.
| Where the short is | What you usually notice |
|---|---|
| 12V input | The power supply cuts out the instant the PC starts, or the 16-pin connector shows heat damage |
| GPU core rail | Fans spin, no picture, sometimes not detected |
| Memory rail | No display or not detected, sometimes after a spell of artefacts |
If you suspect a short, stop trying the card in your PC. Each attempt risks more damage.
RTX 4090 Weight, Sag and Damage Near the PCIe Slot
RTX 4090 cards are heavy, about 2.2kg for the Founders Edition and more for some partner cards, and cracked boards near the PCIe slot have been reported on some of them. Weight hangs off the slot and the bracket, and the board takes the strain.
- Founders Edition: Tom's Hardware lists it at 2,186g; it measures 304 x 137 x 61mm and takes three slots.
- Partner cards can be bigger: Guru3D measured the ASUS TUF Gaming at 348.2 x 160 x 72.6mm, 3.5 slots and just over 2.3kg.
What has been reported:
- December 2023: TweakTown reported that the US repair channel NorthridgeFix had received 19 RTX 4090s from one customer, most cracked near the PCIe slot's retention latch, all of those ASUS models. The cause was not established; the cards' weight and rough transport in pre-built systems were suggested.
- February 2024: Guru3D, KitGuru and The FPS Review reported that Gigabyte had revised its RTX 4090 and 4080 Gaming OC board (revision 1.1) with more board area around the PCIe locking tab, after owners reported cracking there.
On the bench, knocked-off parts and damaged edge contacts near the slot can usually be repaired, from $370. A crack is different: these boards have many layers (TweakTown's report said 12 to 15), and a crack that has broken inner-layer traces is often not reliably repairable. The diagnostic tells you which you have.
To protect a working card, use a support bracket if one came with it, and take the card out before the PC is moved or shipped.
RTX 4090 Shutdowns and Crashes Under Load
An RTX 4090 that crashes or switches the PC off only under heavy load has a fault on the card, a cooling problem, or a power supply or cable that cannot keep up with a 450W card. The last two are worth ruling out before sending anything.
- Power supply: NVIDIA recommends at least 850W, based on a Ryzen 9 5900X system, and notes the figure changes with the rest of the system.
- Cabling: NVIDIA lists three PCIe 8-pin cables into the supplied adapter, or one 450W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable. Give each adapter input its own cable rather than splitting one across two.
- The plug: fully seated and not pulled sideways, as in the connector section.
- Whole PC off, or just the game? A full switch-off points first at the power supply; a driver reset points more at the card or its cooling.
- Temperatures: a hotspot far above the GPU reading suggests poor cooler contact.
A card that passes the full bench test costs you only the $150 diagnostic, and the results show where else to look.
RTX 4090 vs RTX 4090 D
The RTX 4090 D is a China-market version of the 4090 with fewer CUDA cores and a lower power rating, built on the same AD102 GPU with the same 24GB memory layout. NVIDIA released it in December 2023 to meet US export rules that stopped the full 4090 being sold in China.
| RTX 4090 | RTX 4090 D | |
|---|---|---|
| Released | October 2022 | December 2023, China only |
| GPU | AD102 | AD102, with fewer cores enabled |
| CUDA cores | 16,384 | 14,592 |
| Boost clock | 2.52 GHz | 2.52 GHz |
| Memory | 24GB GDDR6X, twelve 2GB chips | 24GB GDDR6X, twelve 2GB chips |
| Memory bus | 384-bit | 384-bit |
| Rated power | 450W | 425W |
Connector, power and memory work is the same on both. Firmware is always matched to the exact card and variant; GPU-Z or the driver shows which one you have.
Founders Edition and Partner RTX 4090 Cards
We repair NVIDIA's Founders Edition RTX 4090 and partner cards from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, Zotac, PNY, Galax, Palit, Gainward, Inno3D, Colorful and others. Design differences decide how each is stripped and what parts it takes.
| Founders Edition | Partner cards | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | 304 x 137 x 61mm, three slots, 2,186g | Often larger; the ASUS TUF Gaming takes 3.5 slots |
| Board | Very close to the RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition board, according to Guru3D and PCGH | Each maker's own layout and power stages |
| Power input | One 16-pin connector, adapter for four 8-pin plugs in the box | A 16-pin connector on models such as the ASUS TUF Gaming; check your card |
| Memory cooling | Pads straight onto the vapour chamber base | Varies by cooler |
| On the bench | A careful strip: the cover is held by magnets, and Igor's Lab advises a well-fitting bit so the small screws are not stripped | Parts, pads and firmware matched to the exact model and revision |
If your partner card has a BIOS switch and died after a firmware update, try the other position, with the PC off, before sending it.
How We Diagnose an RTX 4090
An RTX 4090 is diagnosed in order from the least invasive check to the most, so testing does not add to the damage. Steps that do not fit the symptom are skipped.
- Look first. The 16-pin socket under magnification, the slot area for cracks, and both sides for burnt or missing parts and earlier work.
- Measure cold. The 12V input and every rail to ground, unpowered.
- Power up limited. A bench supply caps the current so a hidden fault cannot spread.
- Follow the rails. Each supply checked in its power-up sequence.
- Check firmware against the right image for that board, where the symptom calls for it.
- Test memory. All twelve chips, cold and warm.
- Reproduce heat faults by running the card hot or warming a suspect area.
- Quote. The fault, the fix, a fixed price and an honest view on whether it is worth it. Nothing proceeds without your go-ahead.
- Repair and prove it, ending with a long full-power run and the connector on a thermal camera.
What RTX 4090 Faults Can Be Repaired?
Most RTX 4090 faults can be repaired at board level, but a failed GPU core or a crack through the inner layers of the board usually cannot be repaired economically. Faults that are usually repairable:
- Melted or damaged 16-pin power connectors
- Failed power stages and input parts
- Failed GDDR6X chips, subject to the correct chip being available
- Parts knocked off near the slot or during a water-block fit
- Damaged PCIe edge contacts and display ports
- Corrupted or mismatched firmware
- Overheating from worn pads and dried paste
Often not worth repairing:
- A failed or cracked AD102 GPU. A replacement core would have to come from a salvaged card, which makes the job costly and uncertain; warranty is the better route if you have it.
- A crack through the board's inner layers (see weight and sag).
- Burn damage through the board under a connector or power stage.
- Several major faults at once, or damage from an earlier repair attempt.
If that is your card, you pay the $150 diagnostic and any return postage, nothing else, and get an explanation of what failed.
RTX 4090 Repair Cost
RTX 4090 repairs start from $330, a melted connector from $370, and your final price is fixed in the quote before any work starts. Call 02 8428 9224 with the card model and the fault for a starting price.
| Work | Price |
|---|---|
| Bench diagnostic | $150, waived if you go ahead with the repair |
| Thermal service, paste and measured pads | From $330 |
| Firmware and BIOS recovery | From $330 |
| Melted 16-pin connector, other connector, port and trace repair | From $370 |
| Power-stage repair | From $430 |
| GDDR6X memory chip replacement | From $530, subject to the correct chip being available |
| Reflow or reball | From $630, quoted per card |
A melt that harmed nothing behind the connector is priced as connector work; if a power stage failed too, both appear in one quote. Interstate customers also pay postage both ways.
Is Your RTX 4090 Still Under Warranty?
Check before you send it anywhere: a 4090 bought new later in its life may still be inside the maker's warranty, and if it is, the retailer you bought it from is your first stop. Launch-day cards from October 2022 are now four years old, but plenty were sold well after that.
- Find the term. Warranty periods differ between brands and regions; check the maker's Australian warranty page against your receipt date.
- Consumer guarantees. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law sit with the retailer, and the ACCC says the guarantee of acceptable quality usually still applies after a warranty expires. On a card this expensive, it is worth asking.
- Melted connectors. NVIDIA's November 2022 offer of an expedited RMA was made then; ask the retailer or maker what applies to your card now.
- Second-hand cards. Check the maker's proof-of-purchase terms before assuming either way.
Our repair is for the card with no warranty path left.
Is an RTX 4090 Worth Repairing?
Almost always, if the GPU and board are sound: the RTX 4090 holds its second-hand value well, so most repairs cost a small part of what a working card sells for. Compare your quote with recently sold listings for working 4090s, not asking prices.
As an illustration: if working 4090s are selling for around $2,500 near you, a melted connector from $370, even with a power stage added, is a small share of that value, and a memory chip from $530 or a reball from $630 still leaves a wide margin.
- Usually worth it: a connector, power stage, single memory chip, firmware or thermal fault on an out-of-warranty or second-hand card. Our replaced parts come with 12 months' warranty against the same fault; a used replacement card comes with an unknown history.
- May not be: a failed GPU core, a board cracked through its inner layers, or several major faults whose total approaches a big slice of the card's value.
- Not yet: a card still under warranty or with a consumer guarantee claim open. Go to the retailer first.
RTX 4090 Repair Turnaround
An RTX 4090 usually spends one to ten business days on the bench, depending on the fault.
| Kind of job | Typical time on the bench |
|---|---|
| Thermal service, firmware recovery | 1–2 business days |
| Connector, power-stage and memory repairs | 3–7 business days |
| Reball and physical damage, including slot-area damage | 5–10 business days |
| Faults that only show when warm | Longer, as the fault must be reproduced before it can be traced |
A job waiting on a part, such as a memory chip, depends on supply, and you know that before approving the quote. Posted cards also spend time in transit each way; the mail-in graphics card repair page lists Australia Post estimates by state.
What Happens After an RTX 4090 Repair?
A repaired RTX 4090 is tested at full load before it leaves, and you get a plain account of what was replaced and why. Every output is checked, then a long full-power run logs temperatures while a thermal camera watches the 16-pin connector.
Once the invoice is paid, collect the card by arrangement or have it posted back on your prepaid label, or with return postage added to the invoice at cost.
Warranty: 12 months on the parts we replace, for the same fault. If a replaced part fails within the year, the card comes back to us and the part is covered. Seat the plug fully and support the card to look after the repair.
Typical RTX 4090 Repair Scenarios
These are fault patterns RTX 4090 owners bring to a repair bench, with what testing usually finds and what the repair involves. They describe types of fault, not any one customer's card: yours is quoted on its own findings.

- From $370 if repairable, usually five to ten business days; otherwise the $150 diagnostic and return postage
- Before it goes back
- The PCIe link checked for full width and speed, then a load run with the card supported.
Artefacts that start once the card is warm
- What you see
- Coloured specks or blocky textures after 15 to 30 minutes of load, then a driver crash.
- What diagnosis usually finds
- Errors at temperature on one 32-bit slice of the bus, pointing to a single GDDR6X chip, with its supply rail testing normal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a melted RTX 4090 power connector be repaired?
Yes, in most cases. The melted 16-pin socket is removed, the board under it cleaned and checked, and a new connector fitted, from $370. The 12V input and power stages behind it are tested too; a failed stage is replaced from $430 and included in the quote before work starts. Replace the melted cable or adapter as well.
Why did my RTX 4090 power connector melt?
Investigations in late 2022 pointed mainly at plugs that were not fully seated. Gamers Nexus found a partly inserted plug, especially one pulled at an angle, could overheat, and that debris could contribute. NVIDIA said a common issue was connectors not fully plugged in. The later 12V-2x6 standard shortened the sense pins to guard against this.
Does the RTX 4090 have memory on the back of the board like the RTX 3090?
No. The RTX 4090 uses twelve 2GB GDDR6X chips, all on one side of the board around the GPU, cooled by the main cooler. The RTX 3090 splits twenty-four 1GB chips across both sides, with the rear ones cooled only through the backplate.
How much does an RTX 4090 repair cost?
Thermal service or firmware recovery from $330, a melted connector from $370, a power stage from $430, a GDDR6X chip from $530 subject to availability, and reflow or reball from $630. The $150 diagnostic is waived if you go ahead. Call 02 8428 9224 with your card and the fault for a starting price.
What warranty comes with an RTX 4090 repair?
The parts we replace are covered for 12 months against the same fault. If a replaced part fails within the year and the fault returns, the card comes back to us and the part is covered. An unrelated new fault is diagnosed and quoted separately.
My RTX 4090 might still be under warranty. Should I send it to you?
Check first. If it is within the maker's warranty, go to the retailer, because your consumer guarantee rights under Australian Consumer Law sit with them. The ACCC says the guarantee of acceptable quality usually still applies after a warranty expires, so it is worth asking even then.
Is an RTX 4090 worth repairing?
Usually, yes. The 4090 holds its second-hand value well, so a connector, power-stage, memory or firmware repair is normally a small share of what a working card sells for. Compare your quote with recently sold listings. A failed GPU core or a crack through the board's inner layers are the main exceptions.
Can a cracked RTX 4090 board be repaired?
It depends on the crack. Parts knocked off near the PCIe slot and damaged edge contacts can usually be repaired, from $370. A crack that has broken inner-layer traces is often not reliably repairable; if so, you pay the $150 diagnostic and return postage only.
How long does an RTX 4090 repair take?
Thermal and firmware jobs usually take one to two business days; connector, power-stage and memory repairs three to seven; reball or physical damage five to ten. Heat-related faults take longer, a part on order adds its supply time, and posted cards add transit each way.
Do you repair the RTX 4090 D?
Yes. The RTX 4090 D is the China-market version released in December 2023, with 14,592 CUDA cores and a 425W rating instead of 450W, and the same twelve 2GB GDDR6X chips. Connector, power and memory work is the same; firmware is matched to the exact variant.
