RTX 5090 Faults We Diagnose and Repair

RTX 5090 faults sort into power, memory, firmware, heat and physical damage, and on a card rated at 575W the power side is always checked closely. The table shows where diagnosis starts for each symptom and what that kind of repair starts from.

RTX 5090 Under Warranty? Start With the Retailer

If your RTX 5090 is still inside its manufacturer's warranty, take it back to the retailer you bought it from before paying anyone, us included, to repair it. The card went on sale on 30 January 2025, so one bought new is likely to still be covered; check the period in your paperwork.

  • Your rights sit with the retailer. Under the Australian Consumer Law, the business that sold you the card is responsible for the consumer guarantees, on top of any manufacturer's warranty.
  • Ask before any outside work. We cannot say how a particular maker treats a card opened or repaired elsewhere, so check with the retailer while the card is covered.

RTX 5090 12V-2x6 Connector and the Melting Reports

The RTX 5090 is rated at 575W and takes its power through a single 12V-2x6 connector, melted connectors and cables were reported from February 2025, and a damaged socket on the card can usually be replaced from $370. What was reported, and by whom:

ReportWhat was found
A Reddit owner, February 2025 (HotHardware)A Founders Edition run with a third-party cable showed burn damage at both ends of the cable, on the power supply and on the card.
Der8auer, February 2025 (Tom's Hardware)On his own Founders Edition at about 570W, one of six 12V wires carried over 22A against a 9.5A per-pin rating, and the power-supply end passed 150°C within four minutes.
Buildzoid's analysis (HotHardware)The RTX 3090 Ti spread its six 12V wires across three shunt resistors to balance the load. The RTX 4090 and 5090 Founders Edition use one, so the card cannot see each wire's current.
Later reports (PCWorld, October 2025)More burnt connectors, including MSI's yellow-tipped plugs, one on an MSI RTX 5090 Gaming Trio.
NVIDIABefore launch, an NVIDIA representative said such issues were expected not to occur on RTX 50 cards. After the February reports, NVIDIA declined to comment to TechRadar.

The causes are still argued over: cable quality, plugs not fully seated, worn connectors and the lack of per-wire balancing have all been put forward. According to Corsair, 12V-2x6 changed only the socket, with sense pins 1.5mm shorter and power terminals 0.25mm longer; the cable is unchanged, so an old, worn 12VHPWR cable still fits a new card.

The connector repair:

  1. Plug and socket are inspected under magnification, and the 12V input measured for shorts before any power is applied.
  2. The damaged socket is removed and the pads and traces beneath it checked for heat damage.
  3. A new 12V-2x6 socket is fitted, and the input filtering and power stages behind it are checked.
  4. The card runs near full power while the new connector is watched with a thermal camera.

Your cable: do not reuse a cable that has melted at either end, and check its power-supply end too. Use the adapter supplied with the card or a cable from your power supply's maker, push the plug fully home with the latch engaged, and avoid tight bends at the plug.

RTX 5090 Founders Edition: Three Boards and Liquid Metal

The Founders Edition RTX 5090 is built from three circuit boards joined by flexible cables, with liquid metal between the GPU and the cooler, which changes how it is opened, diagnosed and repaired.

PartWhat it isWhat it means for a repair
Main boardThe GB202 GPU, sixteen GDDR7 chips, the power stages and the angled 12V-2x6 socket. TechPowerUp counted 19 phases for the GPU and 8 for the memory.Almost all component work happens here, and the whole cooler comes off to reach it.
PCIe boardA small separate board with the PCIe 5.0 x16 contacts, linked by a flexible printed cableA card that is not detected may have a fault here or in the cable.
Display boardThe four outputs on a breakout board at the bracket, with its own flexible cableA dead output can be the port, the board or the cable.
Liquid metalOn the GPU, inside a gasket NVIDIA says is there to stop leaks damaging the boardIt must be kept off the board during cleaning; the gasket is checked on every rebuild.

Tom's Hardware's review said that because of the liquid metal the card "should not be disassembled". Do not open one at home first.

The flexible cables are fragile. In October 2025 Notebookcheck reported that a US repair shop, Northridge Fix, found a bent pin and a broken pin on the connector between boards of a Founders Edition that gave no signal after a water block was fitted, and could not source a replacement connector. Damage there is repairable only if the correct part can be found, and you are told after diagnosis, before any repair cost.

Liquid metal or paste? In TechPowerUp's test, reported by Club386, a quality paste ran within about 2°C of the factory liquid metal. You are told beforehand which material goes back on.

RTX 5090 GDDR7 Memory: Layout and Repair

The RTX 5090's 32GB of memory is sixteen 2GB GDDR7 chips around the GPU on a 512-bit bus, and a failed chip can be replaced from $530 when the correct GDDR7 part can be sourced.

  • Layout: TechPowerUp's photos of the Founders Edition board show sixteen Samsung GDDR7 chips around the GPU, each on its own 32-bit slice of the bus, so testing that shows where errors occur points to one chip.
  • No rear memory: those sixteen chips hold all 32GB, unlike the RTX 3090 with memory on both sides.
  • Signalling and error correction: GDDR7 runs here at 28 Gbps per pin using PAM3, three signal levels, and the JEDEC standard adds error correction inside each chip. Bench testing therefore runs hot and under sustained load, not just a quick pass at idle.

Part availability decides a memory repair. GDDR7 is a newer memory type, and the exact chip a card needs is not always available. We do not promise stock. After diagnosis you are told whether the chip can be sourced and roughly how long it will take; if not, you pay the $150 diagnostic and any return postage, nothing more.

When the part is available, all sixteen chips are retested hot after fitting and the memory pads renewed.

Missing ROPs: An RTX 5090 Fault No Repair Can Fix

Some early RTX 5090s shipped with 168 ROPs instead of 176; NVIDIA called it a rare production anomaly, and the remedy is a replacement through the board manufacturer, not a repair.

  • How it came to light: in February 2025 TechPowerUp found 168 active ROPs on a Zotac RTX 5090 Solid, and cards from other makers followed (reported by Igor's Lab).
  • What NVIDIA said: fewer than 0.5% of RTX 5090 and 5090 D cards were affected, along with some 5070 Ti and, in an updated statement, RTX 5080 cards. NVIDIA put the average graphics performance loss at 4%, said AI and compute work is unaffected, told owners to contact their board manufacturer for a replacement, and said the production anomaly had been corrected.
  • How to check: open GPU-Z and read the ROPs figure. A full RTX 5090 shows 176.
  • Why we cannot fix it: ROPs are units inside the GB202 chip itself. No component, firmware or soldering work can restore them.

If a card sent to us shows 168 ROPs, we tell you straight away. For a second-hand card, give the maker the serial number and ask.

RTX 5090 Black Screen and No Display

A black screen on an RTX 5090 is not always a hardware fault: RTX 50 series cards had driver-related black screens in early 2025, so rule out the driver and firmware before sending the card.

  • Launch-period black screens: Tom's Hardware reported black screens on RTX 50 cards from launch, with some owners lowering the PCIe setting or running at 60Hz to work around them. Driver 572.60, in February 2025, listed fixes for "various black screen issues", and NVIDIA said an optional firmware (vBIOS) update carried the same fix.
  • Cards not detected after a driver install: also in February 2025, some RTX 5090 owners reported cards no longer recognised after a driver update, and NVIDIA said it was "investigating the reported issues with the RTX 50 series" (Igor's Lab, citing PC Gamer). If yours is under warranty, it belongs with the retailer.

Before sending the card, reinstall the driver cleanly with Display Driver Uninstaller, check for a firmware update, try another cable and monitor, and reseat the card. If it is still black, detection points the way:

Detected by the computer?Likely area
Yes, but no pictureFirmware, memory, or the outputs; on a Founders Edition, the display board and its cable
NoA rail that fails to start, or damage around the PCIe connector; on a Founders Edition, the PCIe board or its cable
Some starts onlyA marginal rail, a cracked joint, or contact problems at the slot or ribbon cables

RTX 5090 Artefacting

Artefacts that appear before Windows loads point to the RTX 5090 itself; artefacts in one game only, or straight after a driver change, usually do not. Coloured blocks, lines, sparkles and stretched textures on a hardware fault usually trace to:

  • One of the sixteen GDDR7 chips, often failing only once warm.
  • The memory power supply (eight phases on the Founders Edition).
  • Overheating from a disturbed or degraded thermal interface or tired pads.
  • Physical stress on the board around the GPU, for example from sag or a drop.

Before posting the card, work through the home checks in our GPU artefacting guide.

RTX 5090 Power Stage and Short-Circuit Repair

The RTX 5090's power stages convert 12V into the supplies for the GPU and memory at up to 575W, and when one fails short the card can trip the power supply or stay dark; power-stage repairs start from $430.

Each stage is a DrMOS package, the switching MOSFETs and their driver in one part; the Founders Edition uses stages from Monolithic Power Systems, and partner boards differ, so replacements are matched to the exact board.

  • Finding the short: each rail is measured to ground with the power off, then a small current-limited supply is fed into the shorted rail while a thermal camera shows which part warms.
  • Reading the symptom: a shorted 12V input tends to trip the power supply as soon as the computer starts, while a shorted core or memory rail tends to leave the fans running over a black screen.
  • After the fix: neighbouring stages, the controller and the rail's capacitors are checked, and the first start after repair is on a current-limited supply.

If you suspect a short, stop switching the computer on. On a card drawing this much power, every attempt risks spreading the damage to more parts.

RTX 5090 Shutdowns and Crashes Under Load

If the whole computer switches off under load with an RTX 5090 fitted, check the power supply and the power cable before the card: NVIDIA lists 1000W as the required system power.

  • Power supply: NVIDIA's 1000W figure assumes a Ryzen 9 9950X system, and it recommends a PCIe CEM 5.1 compliant unit. An older or smaller one may shut down at the card's full load.
  • Cabling: the Founders Edition takes 8-pin cables through the adapter in the box, or one 600W PCIe Gen 5 cable. Use separate 8-pin leads on the adapter, not one lead with two plugs.
  • The plug: discolouring, a hot smell or a plug that will not sit flush means stop and see the connector section.
  • Which kind of crash: a game closing points more to memory, heat or drivers; the whole computer switching off points more to power.

A card that passes every bench test costs you the $150 diagnostic, and you get the test results.

RTX 5090 Weight, Sag and PCIe Slot Damage

The RTX 5090 Founders Edition weighs about 1.8kg and partner cards vary in size and weight, so an unsupported or badly packed card can strain its PCIe connector and the parts around it. Damage there is one of the first things checked on a card that stopped being detected after a move.

Warning signsWhat diagnosis checks
The end of the card droops below the slotCracked solder joints and board flex around the slot area
GPU-Z shows the PCIe link at reduced width under loadThe gold edge contacts for wear, scoring or burns
The card drops out, or is detected on some starts onlySmall capacitors and resistors near the connector, knocked off or cracked
It failed after the computer was moved with the card fittedOn a Founders Edition, the separate PCIe board and its flexible cable

Contact, trace and small-component repairs start from $370. A cracked multilayer board is rarely reliable to repair, and we say so if we find one. Damage to the motherboard's slot is a motherboard repair. If your card came with a support bracket or stand, use it.

RTX 5090 Versions We Repair

We repair the Founders Edition and partner RTX 5090s; all use the GB202 GPU with 21,760 CUDA cores and 32GB of GDDR7, but boards, coolers and power monitoring differ.

The desktop card launched on 30 January 2025: 512-bit bus at 1,792 GB/s, 575W total graphics power, PCIe 5.0 x16, three DisplayPort 2.1b and one HDMI 2.1b outputs. The RTX 5090 D is a version sold for the Chinese market.

How We Diagnose an RTX 5090

An RTX 5090 is diagnosed from the least invasive check to the most, and warranty and manufacturing-defect questions are settled before anything is opened.

  1. History. Purchase date, earlier repairs or water-block fitting, and the cable and power supply the card ran on.
  2. Inspection. The 12V-2x6 socket under magnification, PCIe contacts, outputs and any sign the card has been opened.
  3. Cold measurements. Resistance to ground on the 12V input and every rail, with nothing connected.
  4. Current-limited power-up from a bench supply that cannot feed enough current to cause more damage.
  5. Firmware and ROP count. Where the card starts, firmware is checked against that model and the ROP count read; a card showing 168 goes back with a referral to the manufacturer.
  6. Rails and memory. Each supply checked in start-up order, then all sixteen GDDR7 chips tested hot.
  7. Quote. The fault, a fixed price, any part to be sourced, and whether we think the card is worth it. Work starts only once you approve.

What Can and Cannot Be Fixed on an RTX 5090

Most board-level RTX 5090 faults can be repaired; a failed GB202 core, missing ROPs and burn damage through the board's layers usually cannot.

Usually repairableUsually not repairable or not economical
Melted or damaged 12V-2x6 socketMissing ROPs: a manufacturing defect, handled by warranty replacement
Failed power stages, capacitors and other small partsA failed or cracked GB202 core: replacing it depends on finding a donor part and is rarely practical
A failed GDDR7 chip, when the correct part can be sourcedBurn damage that has gone through the board's layers
PCIe contact and nearby component damageA cracked multilayer board
Corrupted or mismatched firmwareA Founders Edition flexible cable or connector that cannot be sourced
Overheating from a degraded thermal interface or padsSeveral major faults together that add up past the card's value

If your card cannot be repaired, you pay the $150 diagnostic and any return postage, nothing else, and we explain what failed.

RTX 5090 Repair Cost

RTX 5090 repairs start from $330, the price is fixed in a quote before work begins, and the $150 diagnostic is waived when you approve the repair. Call 02 8428 9224 with the card model and the fault for a starting price.

WorkPrice
Bench diagnostic$150, waived if you go ahead with the repair
Thermal service, interface material and padsFrom $330
Firmware and BIOS recoveryFrom $330
12V-2x6 connector, port and trace repairFrom $370
Power-stage repairFrom $430
GDDR7 memory chip replacementFrom $530, subject to the correct chip being available
Reflow or reballFrom $630, quoted per card

A melted connector can damage parts behind it, so the quote lists each part needed. Interstate owners also pay postage both ways.

Is an RTX 5090 Worth Repairing Out of Warranty?

Usually yes: an out-of-warranty RTX 5090 is worth far more than a typical board-level repair costs, so repair is normally worth it while the GPU core is healthy. Measure the quote against recently sold listings for working RTX 5090s, not asking prices.

Repair makes sense when:

  • The fault is a connector, a power stage, firmware, a thermal problem or a single memory chip that can be sourced.
  • You would rather keep a card you know than gamble on a used one; replaced parts carry a 12-month warranty for the same fault.

Repair may not make sense when:

  • The card is still under warranty. Go to the retailer first.
  • The GPU core has failed, or burn damage runs through the board.
  • The needed GDDR7 chip or Founders Edition cable cannot be sourced.

As an illustration: if working RTX 5090s are selling for around $4,000 near you, a connector repair from $370, or a connector and power-stage repair together, is a small share of what the card is worth.

RTX 5090 Repair Turnaround

Most RTX 5090 repairs take one to ten business days on the bench, depending on the fault and on whether a part has to be ordered.

Repair typeUsual bench time
Thermal service, firmware recovery1–2 business days
Connector, power-stage and memory repairs3–7 business days
Reball and physical damage5–10 business days
Faults that only show when warmLonger, because the fault must be reproduced first
Parts on order, such as a GDDR7 chipDepends on supply; you are told before you approve

Posted cards also spend time in transit each way. The Australia-wide mail-in page lists Australia Post delivery estimates for each state.

What Happens After the Repair?

Every repaired RTX 5090 runs near full power on the bench before it leaves, and you get a note of each part replaced and the reason.

  • Detection with the PCIe link at full width, and all four outputs.
  • A sustained load with GPU and memory temperatures logged and the 12V-2x6 connector on a thermal camera.

Once paid, the card can be collected by arrangement, or it travels back on your prepaid label or with return postage added to the invoice at cost.

Warranty: the parts we replace are covered for 12 months against the same fault. If a replaced part fails within that year, bring or send the card back. To protect a repaired connector, use a sound cable, seat the plug fully and support the card.

Typical RTX 5090 Repair Scenarios

These are typical ways RTX 5090 faults show up, what diagnosis tends to find and what the repair involves. They describe patterns, not your card: each card is diagnosed and quoted on what is actually found.

Melted 12V-2x6 plug, but the card still runs

What you see
A browned or partly melted plug, or a hot plastic smell in long sessions. The card still works.
What diagnosis usually finds
Heat damage on one or two socket pins, with the board beneath intact and no short on the 12V input.
The repair
The socket is replaced and the pads and input filtering checked. The owner replaces the cable.
Price and bench time
From $370, usually three to seven business days
Before it goes back
A long run near full power with the new connector on a thermal camera.

Connector melted and the card no longer starts

What you see
After a burning smell the computer shut down. Now it trips at switch-on with the card fitted.
What diagnosis usually finds
Socket damage plus a shorted 12V input or a failed power stage behind the connector.
The repair
Socket and failed parts replaced, the rail checked, and a current-limited start before full power.
Price and bench time
From $370 for the connector plus from $430 for power-stage work; usually three to seven business days
Before it goes back
Every rail confirmed, then a long load run.

Founders Edition gives no signal after a water block was fitted

What you see
The card worked before the cooler was swapped. Now it is not detected, or there is no picture.
What diagnosis usually finds
A damaged flexible cable or connector between the main board and the PCIe or display board, or a part knocked off during the strip.
The repair
Knocked-off parts are replaced. A damaged cable or connector is repairable only if the part can be sourced, and you are told before any repair cost.
Price and bench time
From $370 where parts are available; time depends on sourcing
Before it goes back
Detection, outputs and a sustained load on the rebuilt card.

Card disappears after the PC was moved

What you see
After a move with the card fitted, the motherboard shows a graphics warning or the card drops out.
What diagnosis usually finds
Parts knocked off or cracked near the PCIe edge, scored contacts, or a joint cracked by the card's weight.
The repair
Missing parts replaced, contacts repaired and the area checked under magnification for board cracks.
Price and bench time
From $370, usually five to ten business days
Before it goes back
The PCIe link confirmed at full width under load, over repeated cold starts.

Artefacts once warm, traced to one GDDR7 chip

What you see
Sparkles and coloured blocks after several minutes of gaming, then a driver crash.
What diagnosis usually finds
Testing at temperature shows errors on one 32-bit slice of the bus, pointing to a single chip.
The repair
If the correct GDDR7 chip can be sourced, it is replaced. If not, you pay only the diagnostic and return postage.
Price and bench time
From $530, usually three to seven business days once the chip is in hand
Before it goes back
All sixteen chips retested hot, and memory pads renewed.

Slower than reviews, and GPU-Z shows 168 ROPs

What you see
Frame rates a few per cent below reviews, and GPU-Z reporting 168 ROPs, not 176.
What diagnosis usually finds
An otherwise healthy card with the manufacturing defect NVIDIA confirmed in February 2025.
The repair
None is possible. NVIDIA told owners of affected cards to contact their board manufacturer for a replacement.
Price and bench time
Best checked at home with GPU-Z first. If the card has come in, the $150 diagnostic and any return postage
Before it goes back
A written note of the ROP count and serial number to support the claim.

Running hot after the cooler was taken off

What you see
Much higher GPU temperature, loud fans and throttling after the cooler was removed for cleaning or a repaste.
What diagnosis usually finds
Uneven interface material, pads moved or the wrong thickness and, on a Founders Edition, liquid metal disturbed around the gasket. The board is checked for stray metal.
The repair
Interface cleaned and renewed, pads measured and replaced, cooler refitted at the correct pressure.
Price and bench time
From $330, usually one to two business days
Before it goes back
GPU and memory temperatures logged through a long load.

Black screens at home, but the card tests fine

What you see
Games or start-up drop to a black screen, sometimes recovering after a restart.
What diagnosis usually finds
Bench testing finds nothing wrong: normal detection, steady rails, clean memory tests and a long load without a fault.
The repair
None is carried out. The likely cause is the driver, firmware, display cable or power supply.
Price and bench time
The $150 diagnostic and any return postage
Before it goes back
You get the results and a list of things to check in your system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an RTX 5090 be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. Melted 12V-2x6 connectors, power stages, shorts, PCIe damage, firmware and heat faults can be repaired, and a GDDR7 chip replaced when the part can be sourced. A failed GPU core, missing ROPs or burn damage through the board usually cannot be fixed.

Should I send my RTX 5090 to you or back to the retailer?

If the card is still under its manufacturer's warranty, start with the retailer, because under the Australian Consumer Law the consumer guarantees are owed by the business that sold it. Come to us once the warranty has ended, a claim is declined, or for a second-hand card without cover.

Can a melted 12V-2x6 connector on an RTX 5090 be fixed?

Usually. The socket is replaced from $370 and the power stages behind it checked for heat damage. If the burn has gone into the board's layers, repair may not be reliable. Replace the cable too, and check its power-supply end.

Can you replace GDDR7 memory on an RTX 5090?

Yes, when the correct GDDR7 chip can be sourced. Testing identifies which of the sixteen 2GB chips has failed, and replacement starts from $530. We do not promise stock; after diagnosis you are told whether the chip is available.

My RTX 5090 shows 168 ROPs. Can you fix it?

No. ROPs are part of the GPU chip, and some early cards left the factory with 168 instead of 176. NVIDIA called it a rare production anomaly and told owners to contact their board manufacturer for a replacement.

Can you repair a Founders Edition RTX 5090?

Yes. It uses three boards joined by flexible cables and liquid metal on the GPU, so it is stripped and rebuilt with care. Repairs to those cables or their connectors depend on the part being available. Please do not open it at home first.

Why does my RTX 5090 have a black screen?

It may not be the card. RTX 50 cards had driver-related black screens in early 2025, and driver 572.60 listed fixes for them. Reinstall the current driver cleanly, check for a firmware update and try another cable. If it stays black, a power rail, memory or the outputs may be at fault.

How much does an RTX 5090 repair cost?

From $330 for a thermal service or firmware recovery, $370 for a 12V-2x6 connector, $430 for a power stage, $530 for a GDDR7 chip if available, and $630 for reflow or reball. The $150 diagnostic is waived if you go ahead. Call 02 8428 9224 with your card model and fault for a starting price.

What warranty comes with an RTX 5090 repair?

The parts we replace carry a 12-month warranty for the same fault. Should one of them fail within that year, the card comes back to us and the part is covered. An unrelated fault is treated as a new job and quoted first.

Is an RTX 5090 worth repairing once the warranty has ended?

Usually, yes. The card is worth far more than most board-level repairs cost, so a connector, power-stage, firmware or memory chip repair is normally easy to justify. Check recently sold prices for a working card against your quote.

How long does an RTX 5090 repair take?

Thermal and firmware jobs usually take one to two business days; connector, power-stage and memory work three to seven; reball or physical damage five to ten. Parts on order depend on supply.
