RX 7900 XTX and XT Faults We Diagnose and Repair

Faults on an RX 7900 card come down to memory, power delivery, firmware, heat or physical damage, and testing establishes which before any part is ordered.

What you seeWhere diagnosis usually startsTypical repair
Hotspot far above GPU temperature, clocks dropping, fans loudPaste, mounting and pads; on a reference XTX, the vapour chamberFrom $330 (thermal service); a faulty vapour chamber is a cooler or warranty matter

Navi 31 Chiplet Design: What It Means for Repairs

Both cards use AMD's Navi 31, built from chiplets: one graphics die and six memory cache dies on a single package, which for repair purposes is one part that either works or does not. AMD makes the two kinds of die on different processes:

PartWhat it doesProcess and size (AMD)
Graphics compute die (GCD)The graphics engine: up to 96 compute units5nm, 306mm²
Memory cache dies (MCDs)Six small dies, each with a GDDR6 memory interface and up to 16MB of Infinity Cache6nm, 37.5mm² each
PackageCarries the GCD and MCDs, joined by AMD's Infinity Links in fanout packagingBoth together, soldered to the board as one part
  • No single die can be swapped. If the GCD, an MCD or a link between them fails, the whole package has failed.
  • The package is not a practical repair part. New Navi 31 packages are not sold as spares, so the only source would be another card with an unknown history. In practice a failed package means a warranty claim or a replacement card, not a repair.
  • Memory faults need careful tracing. Each MCD drives a 64-bit slice of the 384-bit bus: two of the twelve memory chips. Errors on one slice could be a chip or its MCD, and testing must tell them apart before a chip is changed.
  • Reballing has limits. It renews the joints between package and board; it cannot fix a fault inside the package.

The RX 7900 XT has five MCDs active; Tom's Hardware reported the sixth position holds dummy silicon or a disabled die.

RX 7900 XTX Hotspot vs Edge Temperature

The GPU temperature (often labelled "edge") is a general reading for the chip, while the hotspot or junction temperature is the hottest point found by sensors spread across the die, so the hotspot always reads higher and the gap between them shows how well the cooler is working. Tools such as HWiNFO show both, usually with a memory temperature.

A high hotspot alone is not a fault. Writing about its RX 5700 series in 2019, AMD said running at up to 110°C junction temperature in typical gaming "is expected and within spec", because the GPU raises clocks until a sensor reaches its limit. Read the numbers together:

What the readings showWhat it usually means
Hotspot high but steady, moderate gap, clocks holdingA card working hard, as designed
Hotspot pinned at its limit within minutes, clocks falling, fans flat out, GPU temperature far lowerHeat is not leaving the die: paste, mounting, a pad holding the cooler off, or on a reference XTX the vapour chamber
Gap has widened over months or yearsDried or squeezed-out paste; a thermal service usually fixes it
Hotspot jumped after the cooler was last removedUneven mounting, poor paste coverage or a wrong-thickness pad
Memory temperature high tooPad contact over the GDDR6 chips

Logging GPU, hotspot and memory temperatures, clock and fan speed through fifteen minutes of a demanding game, and sending the numbers with your enquiry, usually shows which row applies.

The Reference RX 7900 XTX Vapour Chamber Issue

In late 2022 and early 2023, owners of some AMD reference RX 7900 XTX cards reported 110°C hotspot temperatures with heavy throttling, and AMD said the problem related to the reference card's thermal solution and affected a limited number of cards. What was reported, and by whom:

  • Reports: owners of reference cards, sold as "Made by AMD" (MBA) under AMD's and partners' names, saw 110°C hotspots and throttling, some with fans at full speed. TechSpot reported some early RMA requests were refused on the grounds that 110°C was normal.
  • Testing: overclocker Roman "der8auer" Hartung concluded the vapour chamber was the likely cause, and Igor's Lab reported several chamber production batches appeared to be involved. PC Gamer noted affected cards showed a much larger gap between average GPU temperature and hotspot.
  • AMD's statement (early January 2023, to Tom's Hardware and others): AMD believed the issue "relates to the thermal solution used in the AMD reference design and appears to be present in a limited number of the cards sold", and asked affected customers to contact AMD Support.
  • Cause: at CES 2023, AMD's Scott Herkelman told PCWorld a small batch of vapour chambers did not contain enough liquid. As reported by KitGuru and HotHardware, he called it a small percentage, said there was no safety concern, and told owners to contact AMD or the card's maker for a replacement.
  • Not affected: partner cards with their own coolers were not part of the reports, and Tom's Hardware reported AMD saying the reference RX 7900 XT was unaffected.

Why this is a cooler or warranty matter, not a board repair:

  • A vapour chamber is a sealed copper chamber with a little liquid inside that boils at the hot spot and condenses near the fins. With too little liquid inside it cannot move heat properly, and no circuit board work changes that.
  • Fresh paste and pads do not fix it, and we will not sell a $330 thermal service as a cure.
  • The fix is a working cooler: through the retailer while under warranty, or a replacement cooler for that model if one can be found.
  • The bench can confirm the cause: paste, mounting and pads are ruled out first, and you get the findings to take to the retailer.

A reference card that throttled from new matches the 2023 pattern; one that slowly got hotter over years points to worn paste.

RX 7900 XTX No Display Repair

An RX 7900 card with no picture usually has a supply rail that is not starting, corrupted or mismatched firmware, or an output-side fault, and each is repairable when the GPU package is healthy.

What the computer doesWhat it points to
Lists the card, but the screen stays blackPower is partly up: firmware, memory or output circuitry
Does not see the cardA rail not starting, or damage at the PCIe edge connector
Sees it on some starts onlyA heat-sensitive joint, dirty PCIe contacts or a marginal rail

Igor's Lab counted separate rails on the reference board for the graphics core, SoC, memory and memory interface. If one fails to start the card stays dark, yet the fans still turn, because they are fed from the 12V input rather than from those rails. First try another output and cable, reseat the card and push each 8-pin plug fully home.

RX 7900 XTX Artefacting and Memory Errors

Artefacts such as coloured blocks, lines, sparkles or corrupted textures most often point to a GDDR6 chip, but because Navi 31's memory controllers sit on the memory cache dies, testing must separate a chip fault from a package fault.

When the artefacts appearWhat it usually means
From power-on, including the motherboard logoA hardware fault on the card
Only once the card is warmA chip or joint failing at temperature, or memory running too hot
After an overclock or undervoltUnstable tuning: reset AMD Software to default and retest
In one game, or after a driver change, and not with another cardSoftware

Errors that follow one chip mean a chip replacement. Errors spread across both chips of one slice can point to the memory cache die instead; if testing confirms that, the fault is inside the package and not repairable. You are told which before spending more than the diagnostic. Before posting a card, run through the home checks in our GPU artefacting guide.

RX 7900 XTX GDDR6 Memory Layout and Chip Replacement

The XTX carries twelve 2GB GDDR6 chips around the GPU package and the XT ten, and a failed chip can be replaced on its own from $530, subject to the correct chip being available.

  • Placement: TechPowerUp's look at the reference board shows the package surrounded by twelve GDDR6 chips, and Igor's Lab notes they are cooled directly by the base of the vapour chamber.
  • Chips: 24GB over twelve chips is 2GB each, rated at 20Gbps. Igor's Lab found SK hynix parts on its reference samples; makers can use other suppliers, so a replacement is matched to what is on your board.
  • The XT: ten chips on a 320-bit bus, matching its five working MCDs.
  1. Testing at temperature identifies the chip and confirms the errors follow it, not the whole slice.
  2. The board is preheated and the chip lifted with controlled hot air, shielding the parts around it.
  3. The pads are cleaned and prepared, and the new chip fitted.
  4. Every chip is retested warm, not only the new one.
  5. Memory pads are renewed at the measured thickness and the cooler refitted with fresh paste.

If the chip must be ordered, you are told the wait before approving the quote.

RX 7900 XTX Power Stage and VRM Repair

AMD rates the XTX at 355W of total board power and the XT at 315W, most of it passing through a multi-phase regulator whose power stages can fail short; repairs start from $430. Igor's Lab mapped the reference boards:

Supply railReference RX 7900 XTXReference RX 7900 XT
Graphics core (VDDCR_GFX)12 phases10 phases
SoC (VDD_SoC)3 phases2 phases
Memory (VDD_MEM)2 phases2 phases
Other railsVDDCR_USR 2 phases; memory interface (VDDCI) single converterSame as the XTX

The reference controllers and power stages are Monolithic Power Systems parts; partner boards use their own designs, so parts are matched to the board. After the failed stage is swapped, the stages beside it, the controller and the rail capacitors are tested, the rail is first powered from a current-limited supply, and only then does the card run a long full-power load.

RX 7900 XTX Short Circuit Diagnosis

A short is located with the power off: each rail is measured to ground to find the shorted one, then a small current-limited supply is fed in while a thermal camera shows which part warms.

  • On the 12V input: the power supply trips the instant the PC is switched on; usually a power stage or input capacitor.
  • On the core, SoC or memory rail: fans may spin while the card stays dark or undetected.

If you suspect a short, stop powering the card. A shorted card switched on again and again can take out parts that were healthy.

RX 7900 XTX Driver Timeouts: Software or Hardware?

A driver timeout means Windows stopped waiting for the GPU and reset its driver; it can come from the driver, unstable tuning, the power supply or the card, and a few checks separate them. Microsoft calls this Timeout Detection and Recovery: if the GPU does not respond within two seconds by default, Windows resets it, the screen flickers or goes black, and AMD Software may report a driver timeout.

  1. Return any overclock, undervolt, power-limit or fan-curve change in AMD Software to default.
  2. Remove the driver with AMD's Cleanup Utility (AMD recommends Safe Mode), then install the current driver.
  3. Run each 8-pin input from its own power supply cable.
  4. Log hotspot and memory temperatures; if the hotspot is pinned just before each timeout, see hotspot vs edge temperature.
  5. Try the card in another computer. If the timeouts follow it, it needs bench diagnosis.

On the bench, memory is tested warm, each rail checked under load and the firmware compared with the correct version. A card that comes through all of that clean costs the $150 diagnostic, and the test log tells you to look elsewhere in the PC.

RX 7900 XTX vs RX 7900 XT Repairs

The XTX and XT share the Navi 31 package, the reference board design and the repair approach, but the XT has fewer active memory cache dies, memory chips and core phases.

  • A fault inside the package is not repairable on either card.
  • Firmware is matched to the exact card; an XT and an XTX never share a BIOS file.
  • AMD's 2023 vapour chamber statement concerned the reference XTX, so a reference XT with a high hotspot is treated as an ordinary thermal problem first.

AMD Reference (MBA) and Partner RX 7900 Cards

We repair AMD's reference cards, sold as "Made by AMD" (MBA) under AMD's name and by partners, and partner designs from Sapphire, XFX, PowerColor, ASUS, ASRock and others.

TechPowerUp noted the reference card's two 8-pin inputs plus the PCIe slot are rated for 375W against its 355W board power, while Sapphire lists 420W for its Nitro+ XTX. On a dual BIOS card, a failed firmware update can sometimes be undone by switching to the other position.

How We Diagnose an RX 7900 XTX or XT

Testing starts with checks that cannot harm the card and moves to powered tests only once it is safe. Not every step is needed for every symptom.

  1. Inspection of both sides under magnification: connectors, burn marks, liquid, pads, earlier repairs.
  2. Cold measurements of the 12V input and every rail to ground.
  3. Current-limited power-up, so a fault cannot draw enough to do more harm.
  4. Rails in sequence: core, SoC, memory and memory interface.
  5. Firmware read and compared with the correct version.
  6. Memory testing warm and cold, errors mapped to a chip or an MCD slice.
  7. Thermal check: temperatures logged under load, then the paste spread and pad imprints inspected for contact.
  8. Quote: what failed, the fixed price and whether we think the card justifies it. You approve before any work.

Can an RX 7900 XTX Be Repaired?

Yes, in most cases, because most faults are on the board around the GPU package rather than inside it. Usually repairable:

  • Failed GDDR6 memory chips
  • Failed power stages and other regulator parts
  • Shorted or cracked capacitors and small components
  • Scorched 8-pin connectors, damaged display ports and PCIe contacts
  • Corrupted or mismatched firmware
  • Worn paste and pads pushing up hotspot or memory temperature

What RX 7900 XTX Faults Cannot Be Repaired?

A fault inside the Navi 31 package, an underfilled reference vapour chamber and severe board damage are where a bench repair is impossible or not worth paying for.

  • A failed graphics or memory cache die: warranty or replacement.
  • A faulty vapour chamber: a working cooler is the answer, not board work.
  • Burning through the board's layers, rarely reliable to repair on a card drawing over 300W.
  • Heavy corrosion, a cracked board, or several major faults together.
  • A previous repair gone wrong, for example lifted solder pads beneath a memory chip or the package.

You are told after the diagnostic and pay the $150 and any return postage, nothing else, with an explanation of what failed.

RX 7900 XTX Repair Cost

Work on an RX 7900 XTX or XT starts from $330, and you approve a fixed quote after diagnosis before anything is done. The XT and XTX share the same starting prices.

Call 02 8428 9224 with the card model and the fault for a starting price. Posting from another state? Postage each way is on you, and so is the choice of service and cover.

Is an RX 7900 XTX Worth Repairing?

Usually, when the fault is a single repair: a thermal service, power stage, connector or one memory chip normally costs a fraction of what a working 24GB card sells for. Check what working XTX and XT cards have actually sold for recently; asking prices run high.

  • Worth it: one fault, a healthy package, and a quote well below a used card with an unknown history. Our replacement parts come with a 12-month warranty for the same fault.
  • Maybe not: a failed package, a badly burnt board or several faults adding up. The XT sells for less than the XTX, so its margin runs out sooner; we will say so.
  • Not a repair job: a reference XTX with a faulty vapour chamber, or any card still under warranty. Start with the retailer, because your rights under the Australian Consumer Law consumer guarantees are with them.

As an illustration: if working RX 7900 XTX cards are selling for around $1,000 near you, a memory chip from $530 or a power stage from $430 costs about half that or less, on a card whose history you already know.

RX 7900 XTX Repair Turnaround

An RX 7900 card spends one to ten business days on the bench, depending on the fault, plus postage time if sent from interstate.

Repair typeUsual bench time
Thermal service, firmware recovery1–2 business days
Power-stage and memory chip repairs3–7 business days
Reball and physical damage5–10 business days
Intermittent or heat-only faultsLonger: the fault must be reproduced first

Jobs waiting on a part depend on supply, and you hear the expected wait before approving. Our Australia-wide graphics card repair page lists postage estimates by state.

After the Repair: Testing, Return and Warranty

A repaired RX 7900 card is tested before it leaves, and you are told what was replaced and why.

  • Detected normally, with the PCIe link at full width and speed.
  • Every output works, including USB Type-C on reference cards.
  • Memory passes on every chip, warm and cold.
  • A sustained load holds stable with GPU, hotspot and memory temperatures logged.

When the invoice is settled, the Radeon is ready to collect by arrangement, or it goes out by post on your prepaid label, or with the return postage charged at cost on the invoice.

Warranty: any part we fit is covered for 12 months against the same fault; should it fail within that year, the card comes back to us and the part is covered. Support the card's weight in the case, and check the hotspot gap now and then; a widening gap is an early warning.

Typical RX 7900 XTX Repair Scenarios

These are ways RX 7900 XTX and XT faults typically present, what diagnosis usually finds and what happens next. They describe fault patterns, not your card: every card is diagnosed on its own and quoted on what is found.

Reference XTX that has throttled since new, hotspot at 110°C

What you see
A reference RX 7900 XTX whose hotspot hits 110°C within minutes of starting a game, clocks dropping and fans loud, while the GPU temperature sits far lower. It has done this since it was bought.
What diagnosis usually finds
The cooler is correctly mounted, paste and pads are fine, yet the hotspot still runs away and the rest of the card tests well: the vapour chamber pattern AMD acknowledged in 2023.
The repair
None, because no board repair would help. You get the findings for the retailer; out of warranty, a replacement cooler for that model if one can be sourced.
Price and bench time
The $150 diagnostic and any return postage
Before it goes back
The cooler is refitted and the card run under load to confirm it behaves as it did on arrival.

Hotspot gap that has grown over the years

What you see
A card that ran quietly for years now shows a hotspot well above its GPU temperature, with fans ramping sooner and clocks a little lower.
What diagnosis usually finds
Paste that has dried and thinned over the package, and dust packed into the fins. The vapour chamber is working.
The repair
Cooler stripped and cleaned, fresh paste, tired pads replaced at the measured thickness.
Price and bench time
From $330, usually one to two business days
Before it goes back
Temperatures logged through a long load run and compared with the readings before the service.

Artefacts traced to a single GDDR6 chip

What you see
Sparkles and coloured blocks once the card warms up, then a driver timeout or a crash.
What diagnosis usually finds
Memory testing at temperature shows errors that follow one chip, while its partner on the same slice tests clean.
The repair
The chip is replaced with one matched to the maker, type and speed on the board, and the memory pads renewed.
Price and bench time
From $530, subject to the correct chip being available; usually three to seven business days
Before it goes back
Every chip retested warm and cold, then a long load run.

Memory errors that point to the GPU package

What you see
Artefacts or crashes in memory-heavy work.
What diagnosis usually finds
Errors spread across both chips of one memory slice, with testing pointing to the memory cache die that drives them rather than to either chip.
The repair
None is possible, as no single die can be swapped. Warranty, if it still applies, or a replacement card.
Price and bench time
The $150 diagnostic and any return postage
Before it goes back
You receive the test results and an explanation of why the card cannot be repaired.

Fans spin, no picture, card not detected

What you see
Fans and lighting work, but there is no image and the computer does not list the card.
What diagnosis usually finds
A supply rail that is not starting, often because a power stage on the core or SoC rail has failed short.
The repair
A new stage goes in, the controller and the rest of that rail are tested, and the first power-up is current-limited.
Price and bench time
From $430, usually three to seven business days
Before it goes back
All outputs tested, memory checked and a sustained load run.

Burnt smell and a scorched 8-pin power plug

What you see
A burning smell during a long session, and one 8-pin plug or socket discoloured or deformed.
What diagnosis usually finds
Heat damage from a poor contact, sometimes a plug that was not fully seated. The board beneath and the 12V input are checked for damage and shorts.
The repair
The connector is replaced and the area cleaned. The power supply cable that was in it should be replaced too.
Price and bench time
From $370
Before it goes back
A long load run with each 8-pin input checked for temperature.

No display after flashing a different BIOS

What you see
A BIOS meant for a different XTX or XT was flashed, typically chasing a higher power limit, and now the card shows nothing while its fans run.
What diagnosis usually finds
Healthy hardware, with firmware meant for a different board on the BIOS chip.
The repair
Firmware for that exact card is written back to the BIOS chip in place. If the card has a BIOS switch, the second position is tried before anything else.
Price and bench time
From $330, usually one to two business days
Before it goes back
Every output tested and power limits confirmed as standard.

Driver timeouts, but the card tests fine

What you see
Repeated driver timeouts and black screens in games, still there after a clean driver install.
What diagnosis usually finds
At stock settings the Radeon clears memory testing on every chip, every rail stays in range and a long load runs clean. The cause lies in the host PC, such as its power supply, the cabling or saved tuning.
The repair
No repair is carried out.
Price and bench time
The $150 diagnostic and any return postage
Before it goes back
The test log comes back with the card, plus a short list of what to look at in the computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an RX 7900 XTX be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. Failed GDDR6 chips, power stages, scorched 8-pin connectors, damaged ports and firmware can all be repaired at component level. A fault inside the Navi 31 package or a faulty reference vapour chamber cannot be fixed by board repair. Diagnosis settles which, for $150 that is waived when you approve the repair.

Why does my RX 7900 XTX hotspot reach 110°C?

The hotspot is the hottest point on the die, so it always reads above the GPU temperature, and AMD has said (of its earlier RX 5700 series) that up to 110°C junction in gaming is within spec. It becomes a problem when it sits at the limit with clocks falling and a large gap to the GPU temperature: think paste, mounting or, on some reference XTX cards, the vapour chamber.

Is my reference RX 7900 XTX affected by the vapour chamber problem?

AMD said in early 2023 that the issue related to the reference design's thermal solution and affected a limited number of XTX cards. Partner coolers were not part of the reports. A reference card that has throttled at a 110°C hotspot since new fits the pattern; one that got hotter slowly over years more likely needs fresh paste.

Will new thermal paste fix a faulty vapour chamber?

No. AMD's Scott Herkelman said affected chambers did not contain enough liquid, which is sealed inside the cooler. The fix is a working cooler, through the retailer while the card is under warranty. We can confirm the cause, but we will not sell a thermal service as a cure.

Can the GPU chip on an RX 7900 XTX be replaced?

Not as a practical repair. Navi 31 is one graphics die and six memory cache dies bonded into a single package, so no die can be swapped, and new packages are not sold as parts. A failed package is a warranty or replacement matter.

How much does an RX 7900 XTX repair cost?

Starting prices: thermal service or BIOS recovery $330, 8-pin connector or port repair $370, power stage $430, GDDR6 chip $530 (if the right chip can be sourced) and reflow or reball $630. Your fixed price comes after the $150 diagnostic, which is waived if you approve. Ring 02 8428 9224 for a starting figure.

What warranty comes with an RX 7900 XTX repair?

Any part we replace on your Radeon is covered for 12 months against the same fault. If it fails inside that year, send or bring the card back. An unrelated fault is treated as a fresh job with its own diagnosis and quote.

Do you repair the RX 7900 XT as well?

Yes. The XT uses the same Navi 31 package with five memory cache dies active, ten GDDR6 chips on a 320-bit bus and 315W board power. The same repairs and starting prices apply.

Are driver timeouts a sign my RX 7900 XTX is faulty?

Not necessarily. A timeout means Windows reset the driver after the GPU stopped responding, which can come from the driver, unstable tuning, the power supply or the card. Reset tuning, reinstall with AMD's Cleanup Utility and check the cabling. If timeouts follow the card to another computer, send it in.

How long does an RX 7900 XTX repair take?

Bench time runs from one to two business days for a thermal service or BIOS fix, to three to seven for a power stage or memory chip and five to ten for reball or physical damage. Faults that only show when hot need longer, ordered parts depend on supply, and interstate cards add time in the post.

Can I post my RX 7900 XTX from interstate?

Yes. Ask for a job number first, then send the card, cooler on, in an anti-static bag in a strong box with at least 5cm of padding. Postage each way and the level of cover are your choice and cost.

Is an out-of-warranty RX 7900 XTX worth repairing?

Usually, when the fault is a single repair, because the quote is normally well below the price of a working used card. Compare recently sold listings, not asking prices. A failed package or several faults together may not be worth it, and we will say so.
