Computer Repairs Pronto

Computer Repairs Pronto repairs RTX 3080 graphics cards at board level on our Sydney repair bench, for faults including no display, artefacting, GDDR6X memory failures, power-stage failures and short circuits. Each card is diagnosed before anything is replaced, so the quote is based on the part that has actually failed rather than on the symptom.

Sydney customers can bring the card to our workshop near Castle Hill by arrangement. Everywhere else in Australia, the card can be posted to the same bench through our mail-in GPU repair service. Every other card model is covered on our graphics card repair in Sydney page.

RTX 3080 Faults We Diagnose and Repair

Most RTX 3080 faults fall into four groups: power delivery, memory, firmware and physical damage. The symptom tells you which group to look in first. It rarely tells you which component has failed, and a few symptoms point in the wrong direction altogether.

What you seeWhere diagnosis usually startsTypical repair
Fans spin, no pictureCore and memory power rails, firmware, output circuitryFrom $330 (firmware) or from $430 (power stage)
PC shuts down or will not start with the card fittedA short on the 12V input or on one of the card's power railsFrom $430
Coloured blocks, lines, corrupted texturesGDDR6X memory, memory power, contact under the GPUFrom $530 (memory chip)
Fine on the desktop, crashes in gamesMemory errors when hot, power delivery under load, coolingFrom $330 (thermal service)
Code 43 in Device ManagerMemory, firmware, sometimes softwareFrom $330
One display output deadThe port or its output circuitryFrom $370
Not detected after the PC was moved or the card refittedSmall components knocked off near the PCIe connectorFrom $370
Loud fans, high hotspot temperature, grinding noiseThermal paste, cooler contact, fan bearingsFrom $330
Burnt smell, scorch marks, parts knocked offPower stages, connectors, passive components, tracesFrom $370

These are starting points, not verdicts. Artefacts can come from the supply that feeds the memory rather than the memory itself, and what looks like a driver problem can be a memory chip that only fails once it warms up. That is why the card is diagnosed before it is quoted.

RTX 3080 No Display Repair

An RTX 3080 with no display can usually be repaired as long as the GPU core itself is healthy. The common causes are a failed power stage on the core or memory supply, corrupted firmware, or a fault in the circuitry behind the display outputs. The first useful question is whether the computer detects the card at all.

Does the computer detect the card? What it usually points to
Yes, but the screen stays blackThe card's power is at least partly up. Look at firmware, memory or the display output side.
NoA fault earlier in the chain: one of the power rails is not coming up, or the PCIe interface (the gold edge connector and the circuitry behind it) is damaged.

Spinning fans prove less than people expect. The fans run from the 12V input through a simple fan controller, so they can spin on a card whose core supply has failed completely. A "rail" here simply means one regulated voltage supply on the card: the GPU core has its own, the memory has its own, and several smaller rails run the rest of the board.

RTX 3080 Artefacting and VRAM Problems

Artefacting on an RTX 3080, meaning coloured blocks, lines, flickering or corrupted textures, most often points to the GDDR6X video memory (VRAM). It can also come from the memory's power supply, from memory running too hot, or from poor contact between the GPU and the circuit board. When the artefacts appear narrows it down:

When the artefacts appearWhat it usually means
On the start-up screen, before Windows or any driver loadsA hardware fault on the card
Only in games, getting worse as the card warms upMemory that is marginal at temperature, or a joint that opens up as the board expands
Straight after a driver update, and also with a second cardNot the card: the driver or the rest of the system

Our GPU artefacting guide covers the checks worth doing at home before you send anything.

RTX 3080 GDDR6X Memory Repair

Failed GDDR6X memory on an RTX 3080 can be replaced, one chip at a time, from $530. The memory layout makes the failed chip traceable:

  • The 10GB card carries ten 1GB GDDR6X chips; the 12GB card carries twelve.
  • All of them sit around the GPU on the front of the board.
  • Each chip connects to the GPU through its own 32-bit slice of the memory bus, so testing that reports which part of the bus is producing errors points to the chip that has failed.

GDDR6X, made by Micron, signals using four voltage levels per pin (PAM4) rather than the two used by older memory. That is how it reaches its speed, and it also leaves less margin for error. A chip with a weakening internal fault, or a cracked joint underneath it, can pass at idle and start producing errors once data rates and temperatures climb under load.

The replacement itself:

  1. The failed chip is removed with controlled hot air.
  2. The pads on the board are cleaned and prepared.
  3. A new chip of the correct type is fitted.
  4. The whole memory array is retested, not just the new chip.
  5. The thermal pads are renewed at the correct thickness, so the new chip is not put under the same heat stress that may have killed the old one.

A second failed chip, or a memory fault combined with a power fault, adds to the cost, and the quote covers it before any work starts.

RTX 3080 Power Stage and MOSFET Repair

Power-stage failures are among the most repairable RTX 3080 faults, with repairs from $430. The card converts the 12V from your power supply into the much lower voltages the GPU core and memory run on, using a bank of power stages: integrated packages containing MOSFETs, the electronic switches that do the conversion, often called DrMOS. A controller chip switches them in sequence. When a power stage fails, it often fails short, either pulling its rail down or tripping your power supply's protection.

An RTX 3080 is rated at 320W for the 10GB card and 350W for the 12GB card, and almost all of that current passes through the core and memory power stages. Heat, sustained high load and voltage spikes are what usually finish them. The core rail is often labelled NVVDD on NVIDIA boards and the memory rail FBVDD, which is useful to know if you are reading a repair forum.

Replacing the failed stage is only half the job. The other half is finding out why it failed:

  • The neighbouring stages, the controller and the capacitors on the same rail are checked.
  • Each rail is brought up on a current-limited supply before the GPU is given full power.
  • The card is then run under sustained load to confirm the rail holds at full current.

RTX 3080 Short Circuit Diagnosis

A shorted RTX 3080 is diagnosed with the power off first, by measuring each rail's resistance to ground to find which rail is shorted. The faulty part on that rail is then located. On these cards it is commonly a failed power stage or one of the small ceramic capacitors around and behind the GPU.

Finding which of dozens of parts on a rail is the short is done by feeding a small, current-limited supply into the shorted rail at low voltage and watching the board with a thermal camera. The failed part is where the current goes, so it is the part that warms.

Where the short is tells you a lot:

  • Short on the 12V input: usually trips the power supply the moment the computer turns on.
  • Short on the core rail: often lets the fans spin while the card stays dark.

Stop powering a card you suspect is shorted. Running it in a normal computer, or repeatedly trying it in different slots, risks turning one failed part into several.

RTX 3080 Crashing Under Load

An RTX 3080 that runs normally on the desktop but crashes, black-screens or restarts the computer in games has a fault that only appears under load. The usual causes are memory that errors once it is hot, power delivery that cannot hold its voltage at full current, or a cooler that is no longer removing heat properly.

Check these before sending the card:

  • Power cables: run each 8-pin power input from its own cable, not one cable with two plugs.
  • Temperatures: watch them with a monitoring tool such as HWiNFO, which shows a separate memory junction temperature on GDDR6X cards.
  • History: many second-hand 3080s spent 2021 and 2022 mining cryptocurrency around the clock, a memory-heavy load, until Ethereum mining ended in September 2022. Dried thermal pads and tired fans are common on those cards, and a thermal service from $330 is often the first step.

In late 2020, newly released RTX 3080s were widely reported to crash at high boost clocks. Discussion focused on the capacitor arrangement behind the GPU, which varies between board designs, and a driver update at the end of September 2020 largely addressed it. A card still crashing today has a different problem.

RTX 3080 Code 43 Hardware Faults

Code 43 means Windows has stopped the card because it reported a problem; if it survives a clean driver reinstall and appears in a second computer, it is usually hardware. On an RTX 3080 that most often means memory, firmware or power. Rule out software first:

  1. Remove the driver completely with a tool such as Display Driver Uninstaller.
  2. Install the current driver.
  3. If possible, try the card in another computer.
  4. If Code 43 follows the card, send it for diagnosis. If it stays with the computer, the card is probably fine.

On the bench, a hardware Code 43 is narrowed down by testing the memory, reading the firmware chip and checking it against the correct version for that exact card, and checking that every rail comes up at the right voltage.

RTX 3080 10GB vs RTX 3080 12GB Repairs

The RTX 3080 10GB and 12GB are related cards, not identical ones. Both use NVIDIA's GA102 GPU and GDDR6X memory, but the 12GB version, released in January 2022, has a wider memory bus, two more memory chips, more CUDA cores and a higher power rating.

Founders EditionYesNo, partner cards only

For a repair, the differences go further than the table:

  • Partner boards differ in their power-stage count and layout, the parts they use and where test points sit.
  • From mid-2021, new 3080s were built as Lite Hash Rate (LHR) versions, which identify themselves differently to the computer.
  • Firmware has to match the exact card: the board design, the memory configuration and whether it is an original or LHR revision. A firmware file from a similar-looking card can leave a working board dead.

That is why we ask for the exact model name from the box or the sticker on the card, and sometimes a photo, before quoting.

Founders Edition and Partner RTX 3080 Cards

We repair NVIDIA's Founders Edition RTX 3080 and partner cards from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, EVGA, Zotac, PNY, Galax, Palit, Inno3D and others, and the board design changes the job.

Several higher-end partner models, such as the ASUS ROG Strix, MSI Suprim X and EVGA FTW3, have a dual BIOS switch. A card that died during a firmware update can sometimes be recovered by switching to the second BIOS before it needs to come to us.

How We Diagnose an RTX 3080

Diagnosis moves from the safest checks to the most invasive, so the fault is never made worse by testing it. Where a step does not apply to your card's symptom, it is skipped.

  1. Visual inspection under magnification. Burnt or cracked components, liquid residue, damaged connectors, torn thermal pads and signs of previous repair work.
  2. Cold resistance checks. With no power applied, the 12V input and each rail are measured to ground to find any short.
  3. Current-limited power-up. The card is powered from a bench supply that limits the current, so a fault cannot draw enough to cause further damage.
  4. Rail-by-rail checks. Each supply is checked for the right voltage, in the order the card brings them up.
  5. Firmware. Where relevant, the BIOS chip is read and checked against the correct version for that board.
  6. Memory testing. Errors are traced to the part of the memory bus, and so the chip, responsible.
  7. Quote. You get the fault, the repair, a fixed price and our view on whether it is worth doing. Nothing proceeds without your approval.
  8. Repair and rebuild. Component replacement, board cleaning where needed, and reassembly with correctly sized thermal pads and fresh paste.
  9. Testing before return. Detection, output on every display port, sustained load, and temperature monitoring including memory junction temperature.

Can an RTX 3080 Be Repaired?

Many RTX 3080 faults can be repaired at board level, because the expensive part rarely fails first. The GA102 GPU in the middle of the board is surrounded by memory chips, power stages and hundreds of small components that work harder and fail more readily. Faults that are usually repairable:

  • Failed GDDR6X memory chips
  • Damaged power stages and MOSFETs
  • Shorted capacitors and other small components
  • Damaged power connectors and display ports
  • Corrupted or mismatched BIOS firmware
  • Dried thermal pads and paste causing overheating and crashes

Replace the part that has failed, find out why it failed, and the card usually returns to normal. The diagnostic is what tells you which case you are in.

What RTX 3080 Faults May Not Be Economical to Repair?

Some RTX 3080 faults cost more to repair than the card is worth, and a few cannot be repaired reliably at all. The main ones:

  • A degraded or physically damaged GPU core. A core cannot be fixed, only replaced, and replacement GA102 cores generally come from salvaged cards, which makes that repair expensive and uncertain.
  • Severe burning through the layers of the circuit board. Multilayer damage can sometimes be bridged, but that kind of repair is rarely reliable on a card drawing over 300W.
  • Heavy corrosion or a cracked board.
  • Several major faults at once.
  • Damage left by a poor previous repair, such as torn pads under a chip.

When a card falls into one of these categories we tell you after the diagnostic. You pay the $150 and the return postage if it was posted, and you get an explanation of what failed.

RTX 3080 Repair Cost

RTX 3080 repairs start from $330, and the final price is fixed in the quote before any work starts. It depends on the fault found, the condition of the board and the component-level work required.

WorkPrice
Bench diagnostic$150, waived if you go ahead with the repair
Thermal service, paste and padsFrom $330
Firmware and BIOS recoveryFrom $330
Connector, port and trace repairFrom $370
Power-stage repairFrom $430
GDDR6X memory chip replacementFrom $530
Reflow or reballFrom $630, quoted per card

A single failed power stage and a combined memory and power fault are not the same amount of work, which is why there is no single RTX 3080 repair price. Interstate customers also pay postage both ways and choose their own service and insurance.

Is an RTX 3080 Still Worth Repairing?

Often, yes: a repair makes sense when the quote is comfortably below what a working second-hand RTX 3080 sells for. Check recently sold listings rather than asking prices, because asking prices run higher.

Repair usually makes sense when:

  • The fault is a thermal service, firmware or a single power stage on an otherwise healthy card.
  • The quote is well under the price of a working used card. A used card comes with an unknown history; the parts we replace carry 12 months of warranty for the same fault.
  • The card is out of warranty, bought second hand, already opened, or refused under warranty.

Repair may not make sense when:

  • The repair cost approaches the card's value, for example a combined memory and power fault. We will say so after the diagnostic.
  • The GPU core has failed or the board is badly burnt (see above).
  • The card is still under the manufacturer's warranty or was bought new recently. Go to the retailer first; your consumer guarantee rights sit with them.

As an illustration: if working 3080s are selling for around $600 near you, a power-stage repair from $430 is easy to justify, and a thermal service from $330 on an otherwise healthy card is almost always worth doing.

RTX 3080 Repair Turnaround

Bench time for an RTX 3080 depends on the fault, from one business day for firmware work to ten for physical damage.

Repair typeUsual bench time
Thermal service, firmware recovery1–2 business days
Power-stage and memory repairs3–7 business days
Reball and physical damage5–10 business days
Intermittent faultsLonger: the fault has to be reproduced before it can be traced

Any job waiting on a part depends on supply, and you will be told if that applies before you approve the quote. Interstate customers should add the postage time each way; the Australia-wide graphics card repair page has Australia Post's estimates by state.

What Happens After the Repair?

A repaired RTX 3080 is tested before it goes back, and you are told what was replaced and why. Testing covers:

  • The computer detects the card normally.
  • Every display output works.
  • The card holds stable under sustained load while core and memory temperatures are monitored.

The card is returned once the invoice is paid: collected from the workshop by arrangement, or posted back using your prepaid label or with return postage added to the invoice at cost.

Warranty: the parts we replace carry a 12-month warranty for the same fault. If that fault returns within the year because a replaced part has failed, bring or send the card back and the part is covered. To help the repair last, run each power input from its own cable and make sure the case has a clear path for the heat the card produces.

Typical RTX 3080 Repair Scenarios

These are common ways RTX 3080 faults present, what diagnosis usually finds and what the repair involves. They are fault patterns, not a promise about your card: every card is diagnosed on its own and quoted on what is found.

Artefacts in games that get worse as the card warms up

What you see
The desktop looks normal, but after ten or twenty minutes in a game, coloured blocks and flickering textures appear, followed by a crash.
What diagnosis usually finds
Memory testing at temperature shows errors in one part of the memory bus, pointing to a single GDDR6X chip. The memory's power supply checks out, which rules out the other common cause.
The repair
The failed chip is replaced, the whole memory array is retested and the memory thermal pads are renewed at the correct thickness.
Price and bench time
From $530, usually three to seven business days
Before it goes back
Extended load testing with memory junction temperature logged, so the fault cannot hide behind a cool card.

The computer switches off the moment it starts

What you see
With the card fitted, the computer powers on for a fraction of a second and shuts off. Without the card, the computer runs.
What diagnosis usually finds
A dead short on the core rail, traced with a thermal camera to one failed power stage.
The repair
The failed stage is replaced, its neighbours and the controller are checked, and the rail is brought up on a current-limited supply before the card is run normally.
Price and bench time
From $430, usually three to seven business days
Before it goes back
Rail voltages checked, then sustained load to confirm the replaced stage holds under full current.

Dead after the power supply failed

What you see
The computer's power supply failed, and now the computer will not start with the card fitted, or starts but shows no sign of the card.
What diagnosis usually finds
A short on the 12V input, commonly a failed input capacitor or power stage. Whatever took out the power supply can damage more than one part on the card, so every rail is checked, not just the first fault found.
The repair
The failed parts are replaced and the card is brought up on a current-limited supply before it is given full power.
Price and bench time
From $430, usually three to seven business days

Black screens under load that come and go

What you see
The screen goes black in demanding games while the fans keep running, sometimes with sound carrying on for a few seconds. It does not happen every session.
What diagnosis usually finds
A power stage that drops out once it heats up, or a poor solder joint on a power input connector causing a voltage drop under load. The fault has to be caught in the act, so the card is run under load while its rails are monitored.
The repair
The failing power stage is replaced, or the connector joints are reworked, and the rail is checked again under full load.
Price and bench time
From $370 for connector work or $430 for a power stage. Intermittent faults take longer on the bench because they must be reproduced first.

Not detected, or only sometimes, after the PC was moved or the card was refitted

What you see
No display, and the motherboard's VGA warning light stays on, every time or only on some starts, beginning straight after the computer was moved or the card was taken out and put back.
What diagnosis usually finds
Small surface-mount components knocked off or cracked, often near the PCIe edge connector, where they are easily caught when a card is handled. Dirty or damaged gold contacts on the edge connector itself can also cause detection that comes and goes.
The repair
Missing or damaged parts are replaced, the edge contacts cleaned and repaired where needed, the board checked for cracks around the slot, and the card's PCIe link confirmed at its full width and speed.
Price and bench time
From $370

Fans spin and nothing appears after a BIOS update

What you see
A firmware update was interrupted, or the wrong file was used. The card now powers its fans but shows nothing, and the computer may not detect it.
What diagnosis usually finds
The hardware is healthy and the BIOS chip holds corrupted or mismatched firmware. Flashing firmware meant for an original 3080 onto an LHR card, or the reverse, is one way this happens.
The repair
The BIOS chip is reprogrammed directly on the board with the correct firmware for that exact model and revision.
Price and bench time
From $330, usually one to two business days

One HDMI or DisplayPort output dead, the others fine

What you see
One output gives no signal on any monitor or cable, often after a cable was pulled out at an angle or the computer was knocked. The other outputs work.
What diagnosis usually finds
A damaged connector, or solder joints cracked between the connector and the board. Less often, a fault in the circuitry behind that output.
The repair
The connector is replaced, damaged pads are repaired, and every output is tested afterwards.
Price and bench time
From $370

A second-hand card that crashes after twenty minutes

What you see
A used 3080, often an ex-mining card, that runs loud and hot and crashes in longer gaming sessions.
What diagnosis usually finds
Thermal pads that have hardened and lost contact with the memory, dried paste on the GPU, and memory junction temperatures far above where they should be.
The repair
A full strip, clean, repaste and correctly measured pads. If a chip still produces errors once it runs cool, it is quoted separately before anything more is done.
Price and bench time
From $330, usually one to two business days

Hotspot temperature far above the GPU temperature

What you see
The fans are loud all the time. The GPU temperature looks reasonable, but the hotspot reading in a tool such as HWiNFO climbs quickly and clock speeds drop.
What diagnosis usually finds
Thermal paste that has dried or spread unevenly, leaving poor contact between the cooler and the GPU. The pads are checked at the same time.
The repair
The cooler is removed and cleaned, the GPU repasted, pads renewed where needed, and the cooler refitted with even mounting pressure.
Price and bench time
From $330, usually one to two business days

A fan grinding, rattling or jumping to full speed

What you see
A grinding or rattling noise, often worse at low speed or once the card is warm, or a fan that suddenly runs flat out when temperatures are normal.
What diagnosis usually finds
A worn fan bearing, or a fan whose speed signal keeps dropping out, which can make the card spin its fans up to protect itself.
The repair
The faulty fan is replaced with one that matches the cooler, and the heatsink is cleaned while it is apart.
Price and bench time
Quoted per card, because fans differ between models; usually one to two business days

Code 43 that turns out not to be the card

What you see
Windows reports Code 43 and the card will not run games.
What diagnosis usually finds
On the bench the card is detected normally, passes memory testing, holds every rail and runs a sustained load without fault. The problem is in the original computer: a driver installation, a motherboard setting or the power supply.
The outcome
No repair is carried out. You pay the $150 diagnostic and any return postage, and you get the test results and the next things to check in your own system.

Code 43 that comes and goes

What you see
Some starts are normal, others show Code 43 in Device Manager. A clean driver reinstall only helps for a while.
What diagnosis usually finds
Memory that errors only at some temperatures, a power rail that is marginal at start-up, or occasionally a poor solder joint on the firmware chip. Catching it takes several cold starts and long load runs.
The repair
Depends on the cause: a memory chip, power work, or reworking the firmware chip's joints.
Price and bench time
From $330, quoted once the cause is found

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an RTX 3080 be repaired?

Yes, in most cases. Failed GDDR6X memory, power stages, connectors, ports and firmware can all be repaired at component level, and shorted parts can be traced and replaced. A failed GPU core, severe multilayer board damage, heavy corrosion or a cracked board may make repair impractical. The $150 diagnostic, waived if you go ahead, tells you which case applies.

Can RTX 3080 VRAM be replaced?

Yes. The GDDR6X chips are soldered to the board and can be replaced individually: ten on the 10GB card, twelve on the 12GB. Testing identifies the failing chip, it is replaced, the whole memory array is retested and the thermal pads are renewed. Memory chip replacement starts from $530.

Can artefacting on an RTX 3080 be repaired?

Usually. Artefacts most often come from a failing memory chip, which can be replaced, but they can also come from the memory's power supply, overheating or poor contact under the GPU. Artefacts on the start-up screen before Windows loads are hardware; artefacts that began after a driver update may not be.

Why does my RTX 3080 have no display?

Usually a failed power stage on the core or memory supply, corrupted or mismatched firmware, or damage behind the display outputs. If the computer detects the card, look at firmware, memory and outputs; if it does not, a power rail is usually not coming up. Spinning fans only prove 12V is reaching the card.

Why does my PC shut down when the RTX 3080 is installed?

A computer that switches off as soon as it starts with the card fitted usually has a short on the card, on the 12V input or a power rail, tripping the power supply's protection. A failed power stage or capacitor is the usual cause. Stop retrying it, as each attempt can damage more parts. Power-stage repairs start from $430.

How much does an RTX 3080 repair cost?

From $330 for a thermal service or firmware recovery, $370 for connector and port work, $430 for a power stage and $530 for a GDDR6X memory chip, with reflow or reball from $630. The $150 diagnostic is waived if you go ahead, and your final price is fixed in the quote before work starts.

What warranty comes with an RTX 3080 repair?

Twelve months on the parts we replace, for the same fault. If the fault we repaired comes back within that year because a replaced part has failed, bring or send the card back and the part is covered. A different fault is a new job, diagnosed and quoted separately before any work is done.

Is an RTX 3080 still worth repairing?

Often. Compare the quote with recently sold prices for a working RTX 3080, remembering a used card has an unknown history while the parts we replace carry 12 months of warranty for the same fault. A thermal service or single power-stage repair is usually worth it; a memory and power repair approaching the card's value may not be, and we will tell you so.

Can an RTX 3080 with Code 43 be repaired?

If the cause is hardware, usually yes. Remove the driver completely, reinstall it and, if possible, try the card in another computer. If the error follows the card, it is often memory, firmware or power, all repairable. If the card passes every bench test, you pay only the $150 diagnostic and receive the results.

How long does RTX 3080 repair take?

Bench time is usually one to two business days for thermal and firmware work, three to seven for power-stage and memory repairs, and five to ten for reball or physical damage. Intermittent faults take longer, parts on order depend on supply, and posted cards spend time in transit each way.

Can I send my RTX 3080 from Melbourne?

Can I send my RTX 3080 from Brisbane?

Yes. Post the card to our Sydney bench with the job number inside. On Australia Post's estimates, Express Post from Brisbane reaches Sydney in one business day and Parcel Post in two to four. Use an anti-static bag inside a well-padded box and consider Extra Cover for the card's value.

Do you repair RTX 3080 Ti cards?

Yes. The RTX 3080 Ti is a different card, with 12GB of GDDR6X on a 384-bit bus and more CUDA cores than the 3080, so memory, power and firmware work is matched to the Ti board. Pricing starts from $330, with the $150 diagnostic waived if you go ahead.

Do you repair ASUS and Gigabyte RTX 3080 cards?

Yes, along with MSI, EVGA, Zotac, PNY, Galax, Palit, Inno3D and NVIDIA's Founders Edition. Partner boards differ in power-stage layout, components and firmware, so parts are matched to the exact model, such as an ASUS TUF or ROG Strix, or a Gigabyte Gaming OC or Aorus card.
